More Dorm Inquiries (for a future SCA student)

Because there aren't enough of these threads already...

So I've been admitted to SCA, and want to know if a lot of SCA (specifically writing) students live in the Cinema floor? I'm hesitant to live there because it is supposed to be the party dorm, and I need my sleep/study time.

Also, what are your thoughts on other dorms (specifically arts and humanities dorm) and what type of dorm (singl/double/etc.) to request.

Thanks and congrats to all!

I’d recommend A&H double. I don’t know of any SCA people on the cinema floor, but that doesn’t mean anything–most of my friends don’t live in New/North. If you need sleep/study time, go for Parkside. It’s nice and quiet here at night. :)

I got admitted to writing and I’m actually thinking my first choice if Fluor, just because it’s close to the SCA buildings and fitness facilities. Plus, it’s got a kitchen, which I think is a bonus, and I think it’s still possible to be social there which is important. I didn’t really want to stay on the cinema floor because I don’t want to be around constant partying, and I think it’d be fun to meet other people that are from different majors. But that’s just my two cents.

So if I did not get any honors upon admissions can I apply Birnkrant? Also when it says “residential college” does that mean anything?

I’m also an SCA admit and am not sure about the Cinema floor. Like you, I prefer quiet for sleep and study as well as just more privacy, which is why I kind of want a suite. However, I’m scared to miss out on opportunities and being more social if I don’t dorm at either New, North, or Birnkrant. Hopefully visiting dorms on admitted students day will help me make my decision! (and yours if you’re going) :)

My son is a junior in the SCA, and met some of his best film-making pals in the Arts and Humanities dorm where he lived freshman year. A lot of film kids lived in Birnkrant, and some in the cinema floor, plus new-north, of course. They really run the gamut. So, no, I don’t think the cinema floor is essential for someone admitted to SCA. Rest assured: you’ll see plenty of those film classmates over your 4 years at USC!

I was WST and I lived in Fluor. It’s the closest dorm to the SCA complex. Really helpful when you’re running late to class in the film buildings! (But this was before the new building opened; still the same general area, though.) Fluor is plenty social and lots of fun – especially nice if you don’t want to share a bathroom with 40+ people. Plus, you’re above Cafe 84 (DAPHNE’S!) right by the UV and the gym.

I’d say the next closest dorms are the main freshman buildings at New North and Birnkrant. Parkside and Arts and Humanities are the furthest away.

The Cinema floor in New/North is a bit secluded from the general NN population, so don’t worry about noise. I will admit, though, that it’s pretty geeky. Mostly male, lots of people who weren’t very good in social situations and most of their time was spent debating the merits of obscure Japanese films. (I had some friends who lived on the floor, and I was friends with a girl who was the RA for 3 years…) I say this only because that kind of environment isn’t for everyone. Some WST kids I knew who lived there were very social and outgoing and HATED it; the more reserved, bookish people dug it.

Just a thought!
