I know it’s early (and pointless ) to ask this, but does anyone have a sense from what admisssions people are saying, etc. of whether this year will be a bigger year for ED than last?

If you go by CC, it’s about even for # people saying they were applying early to the College this year compared to last.

But every info session I went to this year the admissions people seemed to make a point of saying how very MANY of us there were this year. I know that there were more people born in our year than in any other year so far, but I still wonder if early decision is going to be even hotter this year or if its leveled out.

My guess is even hotter, but it’s just a guess.

Well, that's pretty much what they say every single year, so I wouldn't say it's going to be "hot" though I would expect an increase in ED applications.

I always thought that when US News dropped yield as one of their categories for ranking that ED apps would drop. I read that the schools still like it because the more people apply early the fewer they have to accept regular, which has makes their selectivity higher - and selectivity is still one of the main things for the ranking.

Wow, I've read so much about this c*** that I know if nothing else I can have a future career in dun dun DUN .... admissions !!!! You can tell I'm one of those ppl who have to be informed about everything I do. It relieves the stress of waiting. I'm going to be quiet now.

More 87s and 88s I would think - for schools districts that have cutoff dates on Sept 1st, seniors with fall birthdays would have been born in 87, everyone else 88.

I know that this year my school has more ED applicants to Penn than they've had in a while. For some unknown reason, Penn is really popular this year! Not that Penn isn't great (obviously!) but my school's never had this many ED before...T_T sucks that it just had to be MY year....

My GC is really tight lipped about the whole thing and won't say how many are applying. She acts like she doesn't know, since there are other guidance counselors too, as if I believe that! I think our top 5 kids are ED to HYPSM. I have a bad feeling that there are going to be more ED to Penn than ever before. ED has really caught on (did anyone read The Tipping Point?) and people are afraid NOT to apply ED somewhere. Between the pressure to ED somewhere and the increased number of kids, I'm afraid it's going to be the toughest year yet.

There's no official number, but I know of at least 12 people, including myself, who have applied ED to Penn. My friend, who applied ED to Columbia, kept hearing people talk about "Penn this...and Penn that" so she decided to take an informal poll. She tried to find as many kids as she could and the results were 12. It's really intimidating, especially if you think about how many kids who are applying ED that she might have missed!

Since this thread seems to have turned into a discussion about the number of students applying to Penn ED from any given CCer's school...

I'm the only person to ever apply to Penn - ED or RD - from my school (and one of only a handful of students in our school's history to apply to colleges of Penn's calibre). Truth be told, I have absolutely no idea if this is an advantage or not. However, I am fascinated by the apparent popularity of Penn at the schools of other CCers because their schools and local culture are so obviously nothing like my own. I'm reminded of someone I met while touring a college this past summer, who mentioned that Penn is so popular with students from her school (Deerfield Academy) that they have their own...frat...err...something like that. I would wonder what Penn's tendencies are in drawing from "old standby" schools and from schools with which they have no prior experience. Yep, guess I'm just being nervous again.

I'm in the same situation as Talkie Walkie, I am the first ever to apply to an Ivy from my school...its soo rural, i swear no one has heard of Penn

You can add to your chances to be from a state that doesn't usually send a lot to Penn, but even so, I bet it is much easier to get in from upstate rural NY than it is from, say NYC, Westchester or LI.

I know that Penn actively recruits in rural PA, although most apps come from the suburbs and Philadelphia.

i think for most eastern countries.. it's 87. im not sure whether it is true internationally, but for countries in the east, the baby boom is in yr 1988.. and these people will apply next yr.. thus, most of my fellow schoolmates are applying for all their stuff (scholarships or schools) this yr.. even the guys.. who's got 2 yrs of compulsory national service.. no one wants to fight with the 'dragon' (1988 is the dragon yr for chinese...and they are a very competitive batch.. well.. they haf been competiting since young.. cos their batch is just too many pple fighting for too few spaces)
