How should I format my essay?

Should it mirror the kind i do for school and the SAT (5 paragraph)?
OR
Should it be more like a story?

Intro
Body
Conclusion

At least something along those basic lines if it's a bit of a long essay.

i think sparetire mis understood. im talking about college essays. do they really want an intro, body, conclusion, or do adcoms want it to be something more entertaining?

your essay structure should never have to follow intro-body-conclusion. The structure always fits with the essay, itself. Ever since high school, Eng teachers have been telling me to forget the restricting format, anyway. Plus, SAT essays are never very good b/c u only have 25 minutes, and the essays are graded horribly (nobody should ever be looked down upon if they don't follow 5-para format). Prose is one way to reflect your personality, so experiment with organization and structure; it can make a big difference.

Oh yea, I dunno what sparetire means when he says, "bit of a long essay." To me, there is no such thing as a long essay for colleges (the most, 300 words for public schools and 500 for the common app are killin me).

bump.... i really need to know because the first ones are due in less than 2 months

No, there is no specific format. Your essay should be free-flowing, but with structure. You want your ideas to be conveyed appropriatly and your thoughts not to be disorganized, however you should be telling a story... a sort of personal experience or opinion. Forget everything you ever learned in English class essay formats and your essay should be just fine. I would ask people here on CC to proofread though, and perhaps a teacher. (Eng is best)

Best of luck!
