I remember reading somewhere that people that get accepted ED or EA generally receive slightly more financial aid money because all funds are still available. Consequently since some of the funds have already been allocated to EDers, the people applying RD may get less than they would if they get accepted early. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks =)

It's actually the opposite.

In ED they've got you no matter what so they don't feel compelled to necessarily give you extra grants to entice you to come.

For those who need Financial aid in order to attend an institution, RD is better because it allows you to compare offers.

Does a person's chances of being admitted to an institution generally increase, whether applying ED or RD, if they do NOT submit any request for financial aid ?

That depends alot of colleges are need blind, meaning that this would not be the case. However, they certainly need a fair number of full pay students.

Hmm, ses, you make a good point. Would that also apply to EA since you can still turn down the college's offer? (they would need to entice you more for EA than for ED, right?)

My experience with S for Class of 2011 was that EA worked best for getting $$. I think that if the student has a profile/stats that the college really wants, the school knows that the student has probably got other "suitors." My S let one of the schools where he was accepted EA know of his interest in visiting in January. They told him (1) not to fly out in Febrauary, as he was planning, but (2) to wait until March to attend a potential scholars weekend, and the school would provide the airplane ticket.

They seem to open up their wallets more for EA than RD. I also think that private LACs that use PROFILE can basically get any amount of $$ to a student they really want.

One of the biggest drawbacks to ED is you lose your ability to compare offers . This really worked out well for my D when she looked at the FA packages from 2 schools that were tied for her first choice (as she did not expect to get accepted in to both but did). She was able to get over $4k more in grant aid and reduce her loans just by asking for a financial review from a direct competitor.

Thank you for the advice. I plan on applying EA to a couple of schools and they both require the PROFILE. Hopefully it will work out the way I want it to. =)

give Colorado College a shot
