(more) JC to UC transfer questions~

im filling out the uc application...

my major is econ

at first, i wanted to put down econ for all the campuses i will apply to. but then i noticed that they have a spot for "alternate major". i havent decided what to put here, so my question is , will it affect my chances of getting in if i dont put down an alternate major?

also,

my CC is on the quarter system. for me, the first year grades count towards admissions. but what about the fall and winter quarters for the second year? they count as well, right? or is it just the fall quarter for the second year?

i know that grades i get in spring quarter of the second year dont count, all i have to do is pass those classes, because those grades wont be available for adcoms to see by the time the big decision is made for me.

you don't have to put anything down for alternate major if you don't want to...just mark the box that indicate "no alternate major"....it will not hurt you in any way or form...also, your GPA will account your first year and your fall quarter..after you submitted your application and completed your fall term, you will be ask to send in the Work In Progress report for your fall quarter..the admission will use those grades to calculate your overall GPA...hope tat help...Best of luck on your application

so .... your absolutely sure that:

first year and fall quarter of 2nd year will count.

and that winter and spring quarter of the 2nd year will not count at all, it only matters if you pass or dont pass? because adcoms wont be able to see any of your winter or spring grades before they make the descision?

im transfering with 90 units, and wont put down any alternate majors at all. i hope your not confusing this with having no alternate major and being a freshman applicant.

yes..i'm pretty darn sure

I am also sure.

can apply to different UC's with a different major. For example I want to apply to UCLA as poli sci but UCSB as history is that possible or do I have to apply to both as poli sci?

YES! you definitely can do so...

Winter quarter of the second year will count, and they wont review your application until they get your WIP form. This is definitely the rule for the semester system (for fall grades) and ive never heard anything to the contrary regarding the quarter system. They use this grade to compile your overall GPA, which is, of course, the biggest deciding factor. You're correct about spring quarter not having as much weight, but i would suggest doing more than the minimum just to be sure. Saying that one "just has to pass" is technically true but after working this hard thus far, I'd never want to risk it. Just keep your grades up, and such.

but arent the only grades you put in your WIP form the grades from the second year's fall quarter? you dont submit winter and spring grades in the WIP form, you submit only what courses you plan to take during those quarters.

only fall quarter will appear on the WIP form, so GPA will only include up to the second fall quarter....Grades from winter quarter will not be included..

I've been having the same question reguarding the winter grades for UC's.... Today I spoke with a UCLA rep, and according to him they will look at your winter grades but will not re calculate your GPA.. so that means if you had to take classes durring winter to fufill pre-major preperation or IGETC you will need to either fill out your WIP form in jan (but in my case my JC winter semester ends in feb so I would actually send my grades to UCLA-admissions). But as far as the GPA goes UCLA says they will look at them to see if you have completed them but will not use winter grades to recalculate your GPA. It is another story for IRVINE I hear though. So basically you need to check with each UC to see what the policy is, but as far as UCLA goes winter is not used to calculate your GPA. I strongly advice you to speak to UCLA or your specific UC you are planning to attend because it sounds like thier policy differs from capus to campus.

Hope this helps, since I been wondering about the same thing for quite sometime.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR APPLICATION!!!

at that link, click #2 (campus choices), and the voice will tell you that picking an alternate major does help your chances of getting in a campus.

why is this???

Its because if they can't admit you to the first choice they see if your good for the second. Many times peoples second choices are not impacted and easier to get into.

They probably think that you will only go to the school if you are accepted into your first choice major. Anytime there's an alternate choice, I would pick one just in case

I was just filling out my application and I noticed that it doesn't ask for SAT scores or highschool grades, are those not factored into transfer admissions decisions. Also about the classes that are in progress now, will they wait until they receive the transcript before making a decision?

Thanks in advance.
