Hi everyone. I wanted to know whether Tufts is more strongly focused in the liberal arts side, like journalism, politics, foreign affairs, or more on the engineering and math side. I'm specifically looking into biomedical engineering so I wanted to know if Tufts might be a good choice for me, only in terms of major.

The answer is “yes.”. Liberal arts, engineering, you can have it all. I majored in English at Tufts, and then went to law school (which was my intention from the start). My son is in engineering, and loves it.

Agree with WCASParent that one can get a great education anywhere along the spectrum—D is happy and thriving as a math major and has friends equally enthralled with IR, art history and the like. In addition, I gather that the biomed engineering program is excellent.

Seems like a great balance, can you take some engineering courses (for fun) if you are predominantly interested in the liberal arts?

As long as they are open, I believe you can register for them. Engineers do have first pick though. Could someone confirm that?

Engineers get to register before the liberal arts students

Yes. Engineers register first, but if you really want to try out engineering, they will get you into an engineering class or two. I’m going into Tufts in the fall and I was accepted through A&S but want to change to engineering right when I get on campus (had a change of heart). They said I could talk to a few people that would put me on the right engineering track.

Truth, PM93. The E classes are open to the LA students the same way LA classes are open to E students.

Just one of the many joys and wonders about Tufts I’m SO excited!

If you’re looking for BME, there are better places to look than Tufts (cheaper, possibly easier to get into). However, there are opportunities which Tufts provides for real-world engagement as an undergrad and easy access to strong liberal arts courses which you wouldn’t find at other places.

If you’re looking at Tufts for BME because you like Tufts, then definitely keep it high on your list. If not, consider other places.
