more on HOUSING PLZZZZZZ

i am currently trying to decide what halls/residences i will put as my options...
basically, i want to b in the south campus, and still be in the middle of everything.. also i am international and am considering the international residence (i believe its west fairchild).. any info abt that dorm?? also, if anyone ahs any info on shephard hall?? thnxxxx...
i basically think my choices will b, not in any order of preference tho

allison
international res
jones
willard
shephard

if anyone can tell me anything, that would b great.. i know that there have been other posts on the subject, but i really am desperate, i cant make up my mind, and i've never visisted the campus or anything!!!

BUMP bump???

Does anyone know if you choose your roommate, or are they randomly assigned, or what?

Thanks!

randomly assign for residential colleges.

you may be able to pull some strings for regular dormitories though.

hey!
my name is jackie, and i'm a freshman at nu. i live in jones (and i'm living there next year), and i think it's great! it's the performing arts dorm, and we have great facilities like free ceramics and an art studio and practice rooms and a dance room and it's just great. but enough of the jones promotion! :-)

all those choices are really great. allison is a fun dorm too, and it has a good location, but it's on the large size, so i don't know how appealing that is to you.

isrc, west fairchild, is across the street from jones (we eat in the same dining hall), and they have great people but are a small dorm (about 60 people live there this year).

willard is cool too, but they're at the edge of the sorority quads by evanston, which means that they're at the very outer west edge of campus. jones is at the south end of campus, but we're really close to norris and a lot of other academic buildings (kresge, university, harris, ti, louis, fisk, etc.). the sorority quads are gorgeous though!

shephard is cool...they have practice rooms too, but they're locked and you need to reserve them, which isn't the case with jones. the people there are cool, and it's right by allison and the arch.

you did a really great job of choosing potential dorms, and i'm sure you'll like wherever you get placed. just remember that you have to do a little essay for the residential colleges (willard, jones, shephard, isrc).

hope that helped...it was kind of vague, but you can always ask more detailed questions if you want!

thnxx a lott.. i still havto think, im international and so im tempted by the int dorm, esp with the language groupings/arrangements.. but im afraidit might limit the circle of ppl i meet... thnx!!

Can anyone help me out?
I want a large, coed dorm, and I thoroughly enjoy partying. I am thinking about going with Bobb/McColluch or Elder, because I have read that North Campus will better suit my partying needs. Am I right? Any advice would be great

Hey kids,

I've talked about housing a lot before, so I'm not going to go into great detail, but I'll give a few points:

cabsoula - unless you put Allison and Willard as your first or second choices, you will most likely not get them, as they are highly coveted dorms. Shepard is very much like Allison and Willard - it's just a smaller res college (unlike Allison) with a little less going on (compared to Willard). ISRC (West Fairchild) is the international studies res college, but I don't know how many internationals actually live there. West Fairchild mostly has people who either like international studies or couldn't get into their top 4 choices.

mw05 - sounds like Bobb is the place for you. Tons of parties and crazy people. Same with Elder - except no sophomores. The frats are up there too, so if you want to go to a party, you don't have to walk a mile (in the sub-zero temperatures).

I want to have solid 3rd-5th choices, and I like CRC, but I have heard that since not that many people want it, if I even mention it I'll get it. Should I bother including it when I'd much rather get Willard/Allison? What are other solid Freshman choices for South campus, besides those 2 and Shepard/Jones?

I'm hoping to be in Bobb. Not so much for its reputation as a party dorm though. When I visited I stayed there, it was the night of the Ohio State football game, and although there was a lot of activity for the time of night, it was not as loud or wild, as I expected. It seems like a great place to meet all different people. It would also be pretty convenient.

i'm a theatre major, and most of my classes (or all, i dont know) will b south.. how far is that from north campus???

is elder hall south campus or north??

It is on north campus.

a word of advice cabsoula: jones roomes are the tiniest doubles on campus, and if you are not the performing arts type you might not fit in. Willard has the largest rooms and has a fun, social atmosphere.

Jones does have some of the smallest doubles on campus. However, it is one of only a few dorms with lounges and suites. We have a good sized lounge in every suite ( a suite has 8-10 people). We spend a lot of out time in the lounges. They are good for doing homework, and are great places to socialize. As far as not fitting in if you aren't a theatre major...that is dead wrong. I am premed and love it at Jones. I'm returning next year and have become really involved. Of course you must have some interest in the arts, but the interests of our residents are not just in theatre but in music, art, and writing.

Which has the biggest singles?

I'm not sure, but I don't think it will matter. Most freshmen in Willard and Jones don't get singles. In Jones I think maybe only 2 male freshmen got singles. However, we had a couple dingles where freshmen who were assigned roomates got rooms to themselves because their roomates ended up not coming to school in the fall.

So, Ive been looking thoroughly into all the different housing options. Im gonna be an engineer, so it sounds like I should go for a north campus hall/college. However, I dont think I could list 5 north campus dorms without listing a few that I REALLY wouldn't want. Would it be that bad as a freshman to live on the south end of campus even as an engineer? Seems like most my classes will be gen ed anyways. Also, out of the south campus dorms, which are the closest to the tech building? Thanks for helping

just visited.. this whole north campus south campus thing is way overblown.. its a 15 walk from north to south if ur a good walker... its nothing like north-south at umich where its a 15-20 bus ride! .. then again i walked from north -south at nu in nice weather ,might take a bit longer in 10 feet of snow lol

Gyro, I'm also a science major who can't find five north dorms that I really want. So I've chosen about 2 south campus dorms, since I've also heard that half of my classes in my freshman year are going to be in the south campus anyway. It might be helpful to print out a map of the NU campus so you can see which south dorms are closest to the tech building, although it's probably not THAT big of a difference.
