More Presitige? Duke vs. Brown

What do you think?

pretty equal. with schools like these that are so close academically, more or less prestige is based upon the specific departments rather than the school as a whole.

If you go to Brown you will be reduced to an impoverished lifestyle, you'd even be envious of Cinderella. In fact, this will well determine your fate in life.

hahaha.

I really think Brown is more presitigious than Duke. Actually, I'm surprised you even asked. I think the two biggest things in Brown's favor right now are (1) the ivy league and (2) the public face of the University.

Being part of the little ivy club (I agree it is B.S., but it is what it is) will allow you to connect beyond undergraduate with other ivy leaguers in ways Duke wouldn't.

Brown's reputation as a university for smart but different students is only on the rise (The O.C./Family Guy/Rising stats/etc.). I feel like Duke's lacrosse scandal will do a lot of damage to the long-term reputation of the University.

But they are both great schools, you will come out of both an interesting person. The reason to go to Brown is the curriculum and the students. Duke is more of an athletic centered and Southern University.

it depends--in academic & professional circles, brown has a definite edge

regionally, the lay prestige edge varies. schools like duke, vandy, and emory may have an edge in the south--brown, yale, and dartmouth have a sizeable edge in new england, west coast, and midatlantic

I don't think of duke, vandy and emory in the same circle at all. as far as the south, i think duke is in a league of its own. while i favor brown, it is closer to yale and dartmouth than vandy and emory are to duke.

Brown has more "prestige" in general than Duke, but as others have said, this varies by region and context.

and i realize i didn't answer the op's question. i agree with most everyone else that brown is more prestigious overall but yes, depends on area.

i disagree, I think Duke is more prestigious

...are you from the south or do you go to cornell? perhaps both?

um, i do go to cornell, i don't see what that has to do with this argument?

i did spend part of my life down south in FL

It definitely depends on the region. Up here in New England, Duke has (until recent years - nothing to do with the lacrosse team) been viewed as a really good school, but not a Pie-in-the-sky place like Brown. But, then again, we tend to think we have a hegemony on prestige when it comes to higher education. Well, we sort of do.

hm. i'm from ohio and here, duke is seen as more prestigous than brown. northwestern is also (which i think i will be attending over brown ><). from the people i talked to in other places though, they said they thought brown was much more prestiguous than either. really depends on location =P

Are you basing your decision on what you read here or something? If so, go to Duke.

Duke is more well known in the south (probably based on the fact that its one of the only good universities in the south)..On the other hand, Brown is better known in the rest of the country (IVY league tag adds onto it), and even internationally...

Its also got a better quality of life (second happiest students in the country, second only to stanford)...

Id take Brown...

For some weird reasons...
wait, not weird reasons, but for all the rankings that have been published, East Asians(or at least East Asians) think quite highly of
Duke, placing it even above the so-called-low-ivies(the term I hate to use, but I have to admit, it is in use.)

i wouldnt call brown a "low-ivy" it's definitely fourth, right after HYP

This is supported by the choices that kids make when they are accepted to multiple schools. Brown is chosen preferentially over all but HYP, Caltech and MIT. And Caltech and MIT are oddballs as applicants there are self selecting for techies - i.e., one only applies there if that is their ideal.

Id agree with that...

HYP are definitely the top IVY's, and then its probably Brown, UPenn/Columbia (Cant really choose between those 2), Cornell, and Dartmouth...
