More proof that harvard admissions is......wierd

Someone I know at my school (east coast), just got an acceptance letter to harvard.

Stats : 3.8 weighted, pretty rigourous, i think like 5 AP’s, above 1500 on the sats. Lots of volunteer hours at random charities and president of a school club.
That, and he got into harvard. (dad went to harvard)

I would congratulate him but he’s gotten really cocky and hyper (i dont blame him).

Point is, have hope. YOU could be the next harvard acceptee with an ok resume!

You definently gotta apply cuz you have NO idea what might happen. If you asked someone and they opted you don't apply, please apply, because everyone is as clueless as you are. Anyway I think you need some luck in these admissions.

hmm, you guys are obviously wrong...its pathetic.

First of all, there are so many variables in applying to Harvard that you don't know about (essays, recs, other ec's, interview, appearence on paper, etc) You cannot judge the acceptees at Harvard the way adcoms do.

Second, HE WAS A LEGACY. Big points there ppl.

btw, wonderful spelling and grammar for both of you. lol, harvard hopefuls with elementary language skills.

you guys have to realize that stats dont mean everything.. colleges want to accept people not statistics

just because your stats meet or don't meet a college's standards does not mean that you will be accepted or rejected from that college

legacy said it all

nah..legacy goes so far to help sumone out with acceptance. legacy only did not get him in. I bet his interview and his essay got him in. also his community service because to tell you the truth, his GPA is a little lower than what most people got accepted with.

I agree with ptmagnolia. With schools like Harvard and Stanford, you're practically a shoe-in if you've got the family connection. Not to start a debate or anything... I think it's pretty much fact by this point.

No, it's hardly "fact by this point" - in fact, superlative statements like the above only perpetuate ignorance about the college admissions process.

I know plenty of kids with great stats AND alumni connections who were denied admission to different ivies -- try telling them that they're "pretty much a shoe-in."

"dad went to harvard"

7 people got into Harvard from my school, and every single one of them was a legacy. And they weren't as exceptional as some other students that got waitlisted/rejected.

While its true that the admissions process is oftentimes unexplainable, it is naive to say that one thing will clinch the entire process every time. While things such as URM, legacy, etc. may give an application an added boost, they are not the only way to get in. From personal experience, I am a white female from the midatlantic suburbs, no olympic medals, no legacy, etc, and I got in. You never know exactly what an admissions officer will say about each application...therefore the crapshoot aspect.

Thank you Alita. See..nothing special, and she still got in. You gotta have some luck. Yes I'm going to say gotta, harvardpolo08.

Did someone forget a period?

Plus I'm not even applying to Harvard. You might wanna look at your own words there bud before you criticize others. And yes, I'm gonna say wanna. Idiot.

jeez harvard polo. you sound really mean to these guys. you sound like a douchebag.. do you go to Harvard? If you do... that gives me more reason to turn it down....

but for everyone, dont give up hope for Harvard! I didnt have amazing stats at all

1480,800/790/730, 3.9 uw gpa, first generation college student.. etc. all.

and I was accepted into harvard, yale, princeton and mit.. although i GOTTA say, i think i WANNA checkout Yale and Harvard both before I decide. but before i do, it seems a lot of people at Harvard got big heads... and thats definitely a downer for me.

edit:
Oh wait, Harvard is a hopeful. Not a student at Harvard.. hmm.. not even admitted at Harvard and u already got an attitude. Have fun.

Hey...I got in, and am probably going...I'd at least like to think I don't have a big head, lol.

But seriously, I think there are both types. I know amazing people that go to Harvard, but I am sure there are some there that you'd just rather never have to deal with.

Not too familiar with yale so I can't say anything there, but I believe you'd probably find a similar situation.

If your dad is a legacy and he donates a lot of money, that helps a lot more than him just being a legacy...
