I have heard about printer problems at Case, are they true?
I don’t know about this…but if it is a concern, why not bring your own printer?
@bopper, that brings up a great point that I haven’t thought about for D19 at college. Do most people bring their own printers??
I would suggest not bringing one at first, and then seeing if you need one.
Often now, assignments are uploaded and not printed out and handed in.
I think I ended up giving my daughter a printer we had but I didn’t like…she shared it with her roommate. They would alternate getting printer cartridges for it.
CWRU uses Canvas, a learning management system where students upload papers for classes. They can also have online class discusions and faculty can upload reading and review material. Faculty can also place there course calendar and assignments there. My daughter tells me she seldom prints papers to hand in, but uploads them regularly. And I suppose it depends on the student but she does most of her editing and reading on the screen so she seldom has to print at all… when she does have to print she told me there are printing stations all around campus. She says Canvas is great and she can even bring up info on her smart phone through a CWRU canvas app.
I have some advice regarding printers, no matter what school you go to.
Roommates typically share a printer (maybe one brings the fridge, the other the printer) and share paper and toner costs. Have a converation about this expense sharing ahead of time, specifically discussing how if one roommate is printing way more, that roommate should contribute more.
My older daughter ran into an uncomfortable situaton in that she was printing about one page per week, while her roommate was printing about 80 pages a week. The roommate wanted my daughter to pay for half of the pretty significant toner expense. They eventually worked it out.
@vamom4 My DD had the same issue…the roommate eventually brought her own printer as she was an education major and continually printing out stuff (but they are in an apt and there was ample room)
Current Case student here! The printing situation is normally good, but it gets annoying during finals. There’s different Wepa print stations scattered throughout campus. The most popular ones (by the freshmen dorms and in TVUC) run out of ink or paper very frequently, but it normally only takes 1 or 2 tries to find a functioning printer. However, during finals last semester, it took looking in 5 buildings for me to find a working print station to print my final lab. I normally just go straight to the less popular ones but even some those were out of commission.
The way I see it’s just part of college life. On days I have to turn in anything printed I just plan my walk to class so that it goes by multiple print stations. It’s a nuiscance during finals, but as long as you plan ahead it’s just that.
As an engineering student, I don’t print that much. One of my roommates last year was an English major and she just had her own printer in her room to avoid any issues with the wepas. My advice would be to just come to campus planning on using Wepa, and if it’s too inconvenient, then get a printer.
Thanks everyone, this has been really helpful!
My son never needed a printer for all four years at Case. He took about five or six heavy writing classes, in economics, and philosophy, beyond SAGES, and could print all over campus when he needed it. He even got his large scale research posters printed at the print center, and downloaded many papers directly to Canvas. Given how much students move at Case from North Residential campus, to south Residential campus, to suites, or fraternity or sorority houses, a printer would be a pain to store over summers, and also just not needed by most students.
