@sbjdorlo “I think it’s really daunting to have to apply to all these different app systems…”
How true… 1st time around some years back with elder D we were complaining about CommonApp issues/glitches… now this time around we have CommonApp and then some. Fun times ahead!
USC came up so wanted to share this, even though it is probably too expensive. I received an email about this last week: more info is on the USC music website.
RETHINK VIRTUOSITY
We’ve created a radical new model of classical music education for undergraduates by rethinking what it means to be a virtuoso in the 21st century.
The classical music profession has changed. We’re changing with it. In its continuing commitment to a virtuosic education for musicians, USC Thornton will unveil a new educational model for classical music beginning in the Fall of 2019.
@compmom , that USC release is interesting. One of the reasons my S18 decided not to attend USC for classical voice was his impression, both by his own experience and by reputation, that USC was too formal in its approach to classical music education. In fact, the Miami (Frost) dean (who came from USC) specifically called out USC in one of his public presentations during Frost auditions, describing USC as a place where students work in “silos” as in not collaboratively. Don’t know the reality there, but will look forward to seeing what changes they make.
Make a spreadsheet, request auditions in clusters around a location where you plan to be. Pick which schools you want to live-audition at, which ones to to a regional (similar to live, except that it is recorded), and finally, which ones you will just do a video submission.
The S did 7 live auditions (across the US, West coast, midwest, East coast), a couple of regional auditions, and several were video auditions. Lots of travel (time off from school - so make sure to manage your school teachers / counselor).
