I had an interesting online conversation with a scholarship advisor today…

She said: "We look at students with at least a 3.0 and 24 ACT for scholarship purposes. " She emphasized applying for scholarships by Dec 1st.

This info reveals stats that are much lower than what is on the website. The lowest stats on the website are:

Capstone Scholar
An out-of-state (or in-state) first-time freshman student who meets the December 1st scholarship priority deadline, has a 27 ACT or 1210-1240 SAT score and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Capstone Scholar and will receive $1,500 per year ($6,000 over four years).

So, the point of this post is…If you didn’t apply for scholarships because you thought “why bother, my stats are below an ACT 27 or GPA 3.5,” then you need to apply anyway!!! You may get a surprise! It may not be much, but it may be enough to pay for textbooks.

I should add this…I don’t know if these “other” scholarships are awarded in the fall or winter. I think they might be awarded in the spring. I’m now remembering a friend’s son who missed the GPA requirement slighly two years ago (when the GPA requirement was 3.75), and he got his award in spring of his senior year. So, be patient! Also, it doesn’t hurt to email the scholarship office with a personal situation or request.

I’m not saying that such stats guarantee being awarded anything…but…at this point, it might be wise for everyone to at least apply by Dec 1st. I don’t really know what’s going on here. I don’t know if UA has found some extra funding or what.
