More Selective Than You Thought

I go to the best high school in the country. This isn't me talking out of my ass, you can look it up. Average SAT: 1498. Cornell acceptance rate out of my school? 70%, 80% Wash U acceptance rate? 30% I've seen the records. ANYBODY from my school can get in to Cornell.

Which isn't to say Cornell is a terrible school. It's pretty selective, and definitely has some great programs. But it's on or below Wash U's level, not above.

katieshen you are believing an untruth

washu rejects so many people from your hs because they are overqualified, cornell does not do that!!!

Psh. The low end of the kids who get into Cornell (the 1400's to low 1500's) get waitlisted at Wash U. Some kids with lower SAT's (ie mid-to-high 1400's) get in to Wash U if they have fantastic extracurriculars or if they apply ED. My school is a college machine. I know my stuff.

oh really ? I pity washu if you think that.

isn't it possible that the reason behind that is Cornell accepts everyone on merit and selects the best possible students ? on the other hand people in WAshu get waitlisted though they have higher scores than their peers who did get accepted?

wow so much arrogance and you are not in washu yet!! phew! I am not sure abt bio med but apart frm that name one please atleast one thing in which washu is better than cornell.

well, obviously you don't

you just said that

"Some kids with lower SAT's (ie mid-to-high 1400's) get in to Wash U"

and
"kids who get into Cornell (the 1400's to low 1500's) get waitlisted at Wash U."

so either you are mistaken or you just poved my point that washu rejects overqualified applicants and takes the kids with lower stats to improve their yield

I think it's important to realize that stats are not everything. Kids with 1400's and amazing extracurriculars contribute more to a school than kids with 1600's who are worthless and bitter. And the kids who got into Wash U generally had higher scores than kids who got in to Cornell. I got in to Wash U in December. I applied ED 1.

I'm not being arrogant, I'm pointing out that universities aren't as vertically stratified as you seem to think, with the Ivies rocking it out in the heavens while everybody else grubs around below.

At my school, slackers who really want to go to an Ivy go to Cornell (or kids who get really good financial deals, or kids who really like whatever programs Cornell has). This is based on my observation of the accept/reject statistics from my school, which I have actually seen and studied. From my school, the top third of candidates are accepted to Wash U.

ha ha ha, well obviously you havent taken a stats class because you realize that your observations mean absolutely NOTHING you havent done a scientific study.

and yes, the ivies are not alone at the top, they share the perch of mount olympus with top lac's(amherst, williams, swarthmore etc) and Duke, Stanford, etc, ivies are not alone but they are all higher that

Maybe I'm so smart that I can do entire statistical analyses in my brain instantaneously. That's why I got into Wash U. I can bend spoons with my mind, and fly too. That's why you got waitlisted, because you can't. The whole application process is just a front. Really people are accepted/waitlisted based on the intensity of their brainpower. If you can communicate with the admissions office with your mind, you're in. I might get in trouble for revealing these secrets, but I've had it up to here with this jibber jabber.

HOLY CRAP GUYS WHO CARES LOL...stop arguing

If you dont like the school, good for you. I don't like the community college across my high school, but I don't go online posting hate posts about it lol...get a life guys

Look, arguing is a good way to relieve pent-up frustrations. More constructive than say, animal abuse*. This is my justification, anyway.

*I abuse them with my mind.

katiieshen if indeed you are so talented then you would not be wasting your brainpower at HYPS

and while I am not about to start arguing intelligence with some anonymous person across the internet suffice it to say that I am confident in my abilities and am happy with my level of accomplishment, which, apparently you are not for being so insecure

also, your low post count is suspicious

I sign out wishing you well wherever you end up, but, with your metaphysical abilities I expect that you will be the next Miss Cleo

Good Luck!

My final words (probably):

The fact that I only signed up for this board tonight (to defend my future home, meet future classmates, and pick fights with people I will never meet) is indicative if low self-esteem. All those nights I spent sailing through the skies and rocking out were only because I was too worried about college to check out CollegeConfidential.com. :(

Maybe semipturn is really smart. I have no way of really knowing how smart he (she?) is. For all my powers, I'm not quite omniscient. I admit that.

But I'm still smarter than he (she?) is.

If you didn't get in to Wash U, take heart! Maybe it was a fluke, maybe you are overqualified. I wish you luck in all your future endeavors. The world is a shady, shady place. Good kids go to mediocre schools, bad kids go to excellent schools, etc etc. Tools go to excellent schools and then are elected to head excellent countries! THERE IS HOPE FOR US ALL. I don't think everybody who got in to Wash U is better than everybody who got waitlisted, but I certainly don't believe the opposite either.

But I had to fight this kid, you understand that, don't you?

Pax.

Look Wash U's acceptance rate has dramatically declined in recent times. ArtSci which most people applied to is much, much harder to get into than the other schools. The acceptance rate may be much closer to that of the selective Ivies.
From my school Wash U accepts a very high number, but not necessarily the top students.

Wash U does not reject "over-qualified" applicants, it rejects students that they think would not fit. It is not personal and could just mean that your character does not sem to fit with the class that they are creating from ED.

this is really pathetic. sempitern, stop bashing my school and go sit on your ivy throne. if you hate wash u so much, why waste your precious time? ever thought of that one?

bing04 apparently you havent read my posts

I applied to washu because I would be glad to go there. However, after finding out about their waitlist policy(before getting waitlisted) my interest in the school waned and I realized that I did not want to go to such a school.

thanks for your kind comments katieshen :)

Washu has made its decision, this basing has gotten old, you're just wasting your time arguing now.

wow sempitern555, I for one am glad that Wash U waitlisted you. They obviously knew what they were doing. You badmouth a school just because you didnt get in. I'm sure it was a great school when you had a chance of attending, but now, since you have been waitlisted and have no chance, all of a sudden WashU is "mediocre at best and bad at worst". Let me as you, if it was such a bad school why did you apply in the first place? Exactly. We all see the bitterness of rejection in your posts, but unlike those who take rejection in a mature fashion, you choose to run your mouth off like a little child who didn't get the toy in the store window. We know what you think of WashU so please take your ignorant, narrow-minded attitude, leave this board, and go cry to mommy.

I will decide how I spend my time!, and as I am bored out of my mind right now and I have no other viable options of how to spend the night
so its either cc or......... NOTHING as my little town is sleep with nothing going on

btw, can you tell that I am experiencing moderate senioritis

my hs has turned into an alcatraz of the mind :(

For all these smart kids, acceptees and waitlisters alike, a lot of people are forgetting a few important parts of the process. Every school/prep book/article says things have changed in the past few years..... and now:

stats aren't everything - you may have gotten a 1600 - loads of people get 1600's, HYP reject thousands of valedictorians every year - grades and standardized scores aren't everything - there's more to the process than that.

sometimes people who don't fit the exact profile get in/ people that should, don't - semitpern, i am sure you are a great person (despite what you have been saying about my future alma mater on this board ;) ) - but have you ever thought that maybe its more than that. maybe there was someone who had almost the exact same stats as you, but showed a bit more interest.....and they didnt want two of practically the exact same person.

-there are so many different possibilities, i'm sorry you didnt get the result you want, but that doesnt give you the right to talk about the school this way.

your waitlist theory is weak though. every school follows that same theory with their waitlists - so unless every post-secondary institution is now below you (as you say with wash u.) - that argument doesnt really work. i really dont know why they would be so interested in "weaseling their yield" seeing as they are already #11 in US News& World but.....

Please, grow up. Rejection sucks - but if you want to go there so much, like you said - do somethind about it. Don't ***** and moan but take action.

There are some people, like Nomad, who have had to deal with the "insult" of waitlisting as well who have approached this with maturity and insight. I've seen your posts on a lot of other threads and I want you to know that I really respect the way you have taken this.

It is ridiculous to start knocking down someone elses top school, just because they decided you wouldn't be the right addition to the class. Good luck to you both - Nomad especially, you deserve to be wherever you want.

21,000 people (including you :] ) can't be dead wrong.

For those who have made it into the Class of 2009 so far, congrats! I'm probably visiting the last weekend of April - hope to see some of you there!

I'm glad to see that you are so passionate sarasvati
