I'm currently a junior in high school and through out the 3 years I've gotten 5 Cs (and nothing lower thank goodness), does that leave me a hopeless cause in getting to schools likes USF (San Francisco), UCI, and regular CSUs? One of those Cs is a C- too.

This is how my grades are looking like as of now (first letter grade is from 1st semester and the second one is 2nd semester with the exception of World Geo. and HCD becauseI went to a private school first semester where they had a different system that freshmen took world geography. I transferred to a public school second semester where they didn't have world geo so i was put in HCD instead.):

Freshmen:
English 1 - B+ & A+
Geometry - B & C+
Health/Career/Driver's Ed - A-
Int. Sci. - B- & A-
World Geography - B-
French 1 - B- & B
PE - A- & A

Sophomore:
English 2A - B & B+
Algebra 2 - C (both sem.)
Biology - B & A-
World History AP - B (both sem.)
PE - A (both sem)
French 2 - A- & B

I know how important this year is for me and I plan on being more diligent but I'm worried too. Will all these C's make me a hopeless cause for CSUs, UCI/UCSD/UCSC/UCR/UCD, and University of SF? I haven't taken the SATs yet btw. I heard some 4 year schools reject C- too....

CSUSs buddy. N less you can get a 4.0 next semester and senior year

The CSU’s use an eligibility index. They plug in your gpa and your test scores and come up with a number. If your a CA resident and the number is above the accept line, you are most likely in at a regular CSU. The lower your GPA, the higher test score you need. If you can stay above a 3.0 then you’ll have options in the CSU system.

The UC’s are going to be tougher with a lower GPA but they are also holistic. You have a chance to write an essay and include your activities. Merced, Riverside, possibly Santa Cruz. If you have something special to offer and can put it in a great essay, maybe a shot at a more competitive UC like Irvine. However, it’s all going to depend on the rest of your junior year grades (like CSU’s, UC gpa’s are based on sophomore and junior grades in a-g classes… freshman grades don’t count and senior grades aren’t in by application time.)

Keep working hard on those grades and it’ll be OK. The beauty or the public systems is that if you DON’T get into your dream school, you have another shot through the California Community College system.

Edited to add that my D has already gotten into one CA state school and several private schools despite having 2 c’s Sophomore year. It was a really bad year but she turned it around, got excellent Junior grades and high test scores. C’s don’t always mean death.
