I'm currently registered for a total of 17 credits because I'm taking four 4 unit classes and one 1 unit class. I wanted to take a P.E. class to reach 18 credits but none are fitting my schedule and I can't find any other classes worth 1 credit that fit either. Does USC allow students to take 19 credits? Or would you have to pay an extra fee? Anyone know?

You can sign up for up to 20 units on the online registration site. Beyond that, you will need to get permission to do so. However, tuition is only covered for 18 units, so you will have to pay for each additional unit above that. I believe it’s ~$1300 for each additional unit.

The 2008-2009 fee for an extra unit is unit $1,249.00, it may have gone up slightly for 2009-2010.

What I heard was that flat rate is only 12-18 credits. If you take more than 18 you would have to pay PER credit (no longer the flat rate). So thats ALOT of money. I might be wrong, but that’s what I heard during orientation.

I read the per unit fee past 18 units is $1,299.00 (that is for one unit, not one extra class).
I suggest you look over your schedule and try to stay within 18 units unless extra units are required for your major. There are some 2 unit classes.

i.e. The OP did not mention which class is one unit on his/her schedule. Perhaps you can switch your one unit class to a 2 unit class if you find a 2 unit class you like better than the one unit class. This way you will meet the 18 credits without paying extra fees.
Which classes are 1 unit?
