<p>Is it really hurtful that a common app essay is more than 500 words?</p>

<p>if you are at 501 words nothing will happen. Even 550, you should be fine. If it’s over 600 it’ll probably look really bad. Try to keep it close to 500 though, but don’t stress if you’re at 510 or something like that.</p>
