Anyone hoping to be referred by the admissions office to the Morehead-Cain Foundation for consideration of their scholarship (ARP - for out of state schools that do not nominate students for the scholarship) might be interested in this information:

Morehead-Cain Foundation will send out postal letters on Friday, December 13th to ARP students

you can not call them until Friday December 20th to find out if you should have received a letter

the scholars selection committee does not see the UNC application materials

ARP semifinalists will have to fill out an application, write an essay (maybe two?), get a transcript from their counselors, and have a letter of recommendation

semifinalist applications are due January 3, 2014 to the Morehead-Cain Foundation

So, if you're hopeful that you might be considered as an Admissions Referral Program candidate for the Morehead-Cain scholarship, you might want to choose your recommender now and give him/her and your school counselor a heads up about the upcoming deadlines. This information was conveyed to me on the telephone by a representative at the Morehead-Cain Foundation. Good luck!

ILfather…Thanks for the information. I live in California so I will have a long wait. Did you son/daughter indicate in their UNC essays they wanted to be considered for the Morehead-Cain scholars program? Curious how admissions office decides who to nominate and how do they know who applied for Robertson scholarship because I believe you cant apply to both

@bigbooklover – good question. My daughter said she did not indicate anything about the Morehead-Cain scholars program in her essays. I don’t know much about the Robertson scholarship, other than a student cannot apply to both scholarships, but I have no idea how that affects ARP students.

My daughter did not fill out a Robertson scholarship application. Did you? I do not know how the admissions office determines which applicants to refer to the Morehead-Cain Foundation, I’m just hoping my daughter’s stats are strong enough to be referred. Best of luck. I hope you get referred.

I did include it in my essay but not sure if that will make a difference. My stats are good but not sure if test scores are high enough to be considered. Good luck with your daughter…I will have my fingers crossed for the both of us.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed as well, @bigbooklover. You have other schools from which you’re waiting for decisions? My daughter has applied to Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Washington University in St. Louis, and Loyola Chicago.

Still hoping to get one here in Illinois, @creuland. Although last week I was told on the telephone that you are not supposed to call to find out about status of admissions referral program candidates, you can try your luck with Morehead-Cain at 800.741.9023. You may get a different representative/response than I.

Or, you could try the admissions office at 919-966-3621. Please post your outcome if you try either of these approaches. Good luck!

I tried emailing the scholar selection team yesterday to avoid sounding pushy and haven’t gotten a reply yet. I also just saw on the website this update:

The following decisions are now available:

-North Carolina semifinalists
-Out-of-state and international finalists
-Canadian semifinalists

This doesn’t include ARP semifinalists, right?

WAIT A MINUTE. That page used to say U.S. mail (notemail), I am positive. I’m going to call the Morehead-Cain foundation tomorrow morning to see if that’s the case. If it was indeed email notification, then my daughter did not receive a referral. :(

Unfortunately it appears OOS applicants are at a disadvantage for this scholarship unless you go to an OOS high school that can nominate you. I think we can guess which schools those would likely be. No email for my son either, sadly.

@creuland, I called just a few minutes ago, and Cassandra(sp?) told me that they emailed the ARP nominated students on Friday as well as sent out via U.S. Mail. She offered to transfer me to someone who could confirm my daughter’s status, and I was informed that my daughter was not referred through ARP.

I then asked about how many students came to their office through the admissions referral program, and the woman told me they invited 20 students from the entire early action pool of applicants. So, bummer for my daughter. I encourage you and @Mocha99 to give the Morehead-Cain office a call at (800) 741-9023 to confirm your status.

Thanks for the info Ilfather, I will try to give a call during my lunch hour. If they only invited 20 applicants they were looking for those with significant hooks it seems.

or outrageous GPA and test scores…remember all they have to look at is the UNC application. I find it very hard to believe they have had the time to read through all the essays and other info. Other individuals (non ARP) who have been selected as semi-finalists have already filled out the Moorehead-Cain application

Thanks, @bigbooklover. Your earlier concern about the admissions committee making referrals fairly was right on the money. Good luck with the Robertson! Still holding out hope for you here in Illinois.
