Morehead-Cain vs. Jefferson Scholars vs. nothing

My school can nominate one student for both the Morehead-Cain scholarship at UNC-Chapel Hill and the Jefferson Scholarship at UVA. My counselor basically told me that if I wanted to be nominated, the school would nominate me.

I wasn't considering any state schools or any schools in the south. I go to a small, private school and I'm used to and enjoy individual attention from teachers. I really like northeastern attitudes (intellectual, liberal, political, pretentious, and even high-strung).

I also have a good college fund set up for me by my grandparents that would pay for my college pretty much wherever I went.

Under these considerations (and I can give more info), should I apply? This is on rush because my teacher has to know by tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice!

I don’t think you should if your heart isn’t in it. Think of how many kids would love to get that award, who really really want to go those schools, and maybe couldn’t afford to otherwise. Maybe there is some other great opportunity for YOU out there?

Yeah, I totally get that. In fact, I think the idea that I’d be taking it away from someone else is one of the most compelling reasons for me not to apply. On the other hand, I feel like if I decide to do it, it will be because I want to participate in that program. Maybe that was obvious, but I guess what I’m saying is that if they do choose me, then I will feel like I deserve it and it won’t really be taking it away from someone else. Does that make sense?
