Morehead Scholarship

My son was invited to a discussion about this at his school today and while I'd heard about it just generally, I wasn't all that familiar. All I know about the scholarship is that it's for the Univ. of North Carolina. Anyone have any experience/knowledge?

It is a flat-out outstanding program, very prestigious and highly selective. More info at http://www.moreheadfoundation.org/about/whatisit/

You may also want to check out the UNC threads which are in the Top US Colleges section. There are some posters whose kids are Moreheads or Robertson scholars. One is 'eadad', whose son chose UNC over Yale because of the Morehead. You can search for his posts.

I went through the Morehead process, although I didn't get past the semi-finalist level. The Morehead requires an extremely well-rounded individual: excellent academics, community service/ecs, and physical activity are all very important. It's extremely competitive, and the few scholars I know personally are incredible student-scholars who would have done well wherever they went. The Morehead scholarship also opens scholars up to a network of alumni and employment opportunities, so it doesn't end at college. Such people go on to do great things- my 9th grade biology teacher was a Morehead scholar, and she won a $25,000 national award for her contributions to teaching.

The Robertson scholarship is newer and not as well-known, but it's an excellent scholarship as well. It's similar to the Morehead, except you spend a semester at Duke (or if you get it at Duke, a semester at UNC).

As chocoholic said, my son is a Morehead. Two plus years ago I was sending similar posts/requests trying to find out more about this incredible program. I have posted a longer answer for you in the UNC thread and have also sent you a PM.

"my son is a Morehead"

Eadad, for some reason, I find this line rather amusing. :)

leave it to you xiggi!!

So, with all this scholarship talk, anyone here ever hear of the Goldwater Scholarship?
