Morning people, need your advice!

Hi all!

Does anyone have tips on becoming more of a morning person? Now I’m not saying I need to be all smiles and sunshine when I wake up, I just need tips on physically getting up.

It’s been a struggle for me to go to early classes due to me physically not wanting, almost to the point of not being able to, get up.

Any advice is appreciated! I have tried setting multiple alarms and sleeping earlier, etc. but I still find myself struggling. Thanks!

Not entirely sure about getting up in the first place, but, once up, coffee helps prevent backsliding…

Get a clocky!

Another option could be to find the most annoying alarm you have (like I have this terrible, very high-pitched one), set it to the maximum volume, and place it across the room from your bed. It’ll force you to get up to turn it off.

Move your alarm clock (do you have one? If not, refer to above post) out of reach, that way you need to get up to turn it off. Also, get a good nights rest, like 6 hours minimum, if possible.

Tips from a professional non-morning person:
-Get an annoying alarm clock and put it somewhere you need to get up to reach it. (If you happen to have a droid phone, there’s a free app called alarm clock xtreme that makes you solve math problems to turn the alarm off)
-Drink water before bed so that you need to pee as soon as you get up (gross? Maybe, but effective)
-Something that’s worked for me in the past is visualizing myself waking up and getting out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off while I’m falling asleep. Literally just pretending to sit up, walk over to the bathroom, etc, in great detail, so that when you wake up it’s just automatic
-If you’re a snoozer (I am), turn on the lights as soon as the alarm goes off. That way, if you keep on snoozing, you’ll at least be less deeply asleep than before

I wake up (as a HS senior) every school day (Mon-Fri) at 4:30 AM and yes, I actually physically get up and shower first at that time.

My tips:

  1. Like others said, put your alarm clock as far as possible from wherever you sleep.

  2. Slap yourself. Don’t hurt yourself too hard, but exert enough force to get you out of your laid-back state.

  3. Once you wake up, throw your pillow, blanket, etc. on the ground so you get cold and hopefully awake.

What time do you wake up, by the way?

Bam!

Find a reason to want to get up

Drop out of school. You’ll never have to get up before 12 ever again!

Kidding. In all seriousness, I agree with the answers about the alarms. Putting your alarm clock across the room helps bunches. However, to combat the problem of wanting to crawl back in bed, go to the bathroom and splash your face with water and turn the lights on.

I’m not a morning person, but I wake myself up my putting multiple alarms a half an hour before I actually have to wake up. So one at 6:30. Then, at 6;40… etc. Pretty bad advice, but that’s how I wake up in the morning. :frowning:

Also, if you use your phone as an alarm, change it at least once every 2 weeks because you’ll get used to the alarm sound that you usually use and it’ll be harder to get up.

As a morning person who has been waking up at 5 a.m. or earlier since 6th grade, I definitely would change the alarm every 1-2 weeks so you don’t get used to it! I wake up to some lyrical classical music on high so just pick something soothing to not wake you up too violently. Stretch out a ton and muster the courage to swing your legs over the bed and think happy thoughts.

You need to try to set your body clock to the sun.
Go to sleep earlier. No electronics one hour before sleep. No artificial light in your room when you sleep (wear a blindfold if artificial light is unavoidable.)
Open the curtain/blinds so sunlight comes into your room in the morning.
Get morning sun on your skin, specially behind your knees.
Tell yourself before you sleep that you will wake up at x o’clock.
