just curious, what do people think are the most popular and least popular majors to show interest in when applying to college? does it hurt your chances to apply to a very popular major? Does it help at all to apply to a less popular major?

my thoughts on most/least popular

Most popular
1. Communications
2. English
3. Economics
4. Biochemistry

Major's role in admission varies by school, but a general trend seems to be that letters and science colleges (general studies, etc.) don't weight major when it comes time to admission. However, engineering programs tend to be more competitive at many schools, and some "specialty" programs like business tend to be more competitive at many schools.

Most popular majors nationwide tend to be the usual suspects, including poli sci, history, biology, econ, English, etc.

Least popular tend to be "obscure" languages...or so I've observed.

Tops on the list of hottest majors are, in order, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, accounting, business administration/management, and economics/finance, according to demand for the degrees measured by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). Rounding out the top 10 are computer science, information sciences and systems, marketing/marketing management, computer engineering, and chemical engineering, according to NACE's Job Outlook 2006 report.

i really don't think it makes that much of a difference. And if you say something really obtuse, like tribal arts of sub-saharan africa, and there's nothing in your application to reflect your interest in that, they'll know you're trying to manipulate the system.

Computer Science
Economics
Psychology
Social Welfare
Cognitive Science
Mass Communications

Those are the "impacted majors" at Berkeley's College of Letters and Science, meaning they're so popular that they're extremely difficult to get into.

I think linguistics isn't a very popular major...
