I am currently applying to the U of I and was wondering the question above. My guess is most selective: nuclear, and least selective: industrial. Your guesses and/or facts?

Interest in various engineering programs varies from year to year, so, in general, it depends on the year. However, Biomedical Engineering (BME) is still in its startup and, I believe, is currently the most selective.

Oh yeah I forgot about BME.

It is called “bioengineering” not biomedical that is the most difficult at UIUC. That one is by far the most difficult (middle 50% ACT range has been 33 to 35). Others can vary based on popularity at the time but they are all within the same general ranges of difficulty with some being a little harder than others. Within that small range of harder to easier, “general” engineering, followed by industrial, agricultural and nuclear are the easier, and electrical and computer tend to be the harder and the others in between. It is a misconception to think nuclear would be on the most selective side; its issue is that you just don’t get many that apply for it.

Very helpful. Thanks guys

BE is definitely most selective. They don’t even take transfers, you have to get in your 1st year.

“The Bioengineering Department does not accept transfer students. Students are only admitted during the year of their matriculation from high school.”

[Department of Bioengineering - Undergraduate Studies](http://www.bioen.illinois.edu/undergraduate/)

I can attest that BE is very difficult to get accepted to. My son was originally turned down from BE and put in an alternate engineering department. His stats were top 1% of class, 36 ACT, National merit finalist, and loads of AP’s. He was accepted in the very selective Campus Honors Program at UIUC, given the Matthews scholarship and another Freshman scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, BUT STILL REJECTED FROM BIO!!! A few months later, however, he was contacted by the department and told that he was now admitted, as they had several people turn down offers of admission.

The program is difficult, but he seems to really like it.

^ Wow. Those stats are about as good as it gets. All the slots must have been taken.

So general is least selective? What about mech engineering and engineering mechanics
