<p>Okay, let's not turn this into a "I hate this or that clique" thread, rather let's talk about actual <em>behaviors</em> that drive us up the wall. Why? Because complaining is therapeutic and fun.</p>
<p>I'll open with some classics:</p>
<p>-loud premature class-leavers during lecture
-people who answer their phone during lecture (and in a normal speaking volume!)
-people who get on their phone the instant class is technically over to badmouth the teacher, the lecture, the homework, etc.
-people who actually heckle during lecture</p>
<p>I think that whether your teacher is a Nobel-winner or a grad student five years younger than you, they deserve the same respect in lecture. You don't have to pay attention if you really don't want to, but you should <em>not</em> interfere with a lecture needlessly by being loud. The sound of a pen being clicked is as loud as you need to be during lecture.</p>
<p>I HATE when people constantly feel the need to add on or interject while the professor is talking. And the worst part is they’re usually wrong. Shut up and learn</p>
<ol>
<li>Students who don’t respect their professors or fellow students by either texting, talking, or gossiping during class.</li>
<li>Students who mutter snarky comments under their breath as the professor is speaking.</li>
<li>Students who, unless they were absent, have the nerve to ask me at the beginning of class what the homework/reading assignment was. </li>
<li>Couples who take the same course together and who cannot keep their hands off of each other for the entire time the course meets. I took a philosophy course over a year ago where a couple sat a few seats behind me and could not stop whispering their pet names to each other. The girl in particular could not keep her hand off of her boyfriend’s thigh! I’m no prude, but there’s a time and a place for that!</li>
<li>Students who pick up and leave abruptly and loudly in the middle of a class. </li>
<li>Students who ask unnecessary, repetitive questions. </li>
<li>Students who come to class and who don’t take any notes. How on earth do they manage to pass their courses (if they even do pass their courses in the first place)?</li>
<li>Students who spend the entire class glued to their laptops, usually browsing Facebook with a glazed look in their eyes. What’s the point of going to class if that’s all you’re going to do?</li>
</ol>
<p>Students who seem to have no idea why they’re in college and don’t take anything seriously. The bad thing is this seems to correlate with students who are getting their tuition paid for by parents or scholarships. </p>
<p>Someone in one of my classes used to play youtube videos and Itunes really loudly before each class. Not cool. </p>

<p>Lol! I’ve done good on more than one exam without really studying. Some subjects just come really naturally to some people. They look at a problem and simply know the answer…</p>
<p>I’ve mostly only encountered this on this website, but students who think their major/career choice is the only acceptable one and mock everyone else’s dreams.</p>
<p>Students who shove their political and/or religious interests down your throat. I’d like to be able to walk to at least one place on campus without being told I need to find Jesus.</p>
<p>Ahahaha I do all of these things. Who cares?</p>
<p>Also some people don’t take notes. I don’t and I still do pretty well. I’m usually on Facebook or oddly, Minesweeper (I tend to listen really intensely when I’m playing, it’s odd). And sometimes people need to get up and leave. It’s annoying if they do it loudly I guess but sometimes you have to go. Also, in a large lecture hall, texting is not a big deal. Small classes it’s a bit rude to the teacher but in big ones who cares.</p>
<p>Ok I absolutely HATE these generalizations. (This is one of my pet peeves). I don’t take notes. I spend class on fb. I do well on tests (3.8+ GPA). This is because I have near a photographic memory when it comes to things being spoken (I don’t know the term- psych major want to help me out? lol). If I write out notes, it’s actually harder because I’m mildly dyslexic and it’s hard for me to write and listen at the same time. I spend time on fb because if I’m concentrating just on what someone is saying then it’s hard for me to pay attention. I have a very active mind and prefer to be multitasking in order to pay attention. It’s just how I’ve always been. I sit in the back of the room so I don’t distract anyone, but it’s really no one else’s business how I take the class. Now with that said, if you DO distract people (from laughing or whatever) then you should be kicked out of the class. </p>
<p>My biggest pet peeve are people who just whine and complain about how hard a class is rather than putting in the effort to learn the material. If they spent 1/2 of the time studying as they did complaining, they’d raise their grade a whole letter probably.</p>
<p>I hate it when people (excluding those who have photographic memory) do well on tests AND BRAG about it, saying that they don’t ever put work into it. Not a single effort.</p>
<p>Edit: I mean, I get those who go to class, just listen, and do well. But the people i’m talking about are those who are condescending towards others and lie to make themselves feel smarter.</p>

<p>DJ- I get what you’re saying. But there’s a difference between bragging and asking someone how they did it, and having them respond that they just barely studied.</p>
There can be some truth to that some just do well without studying (I barely ever studied for any math test in HS and had As in the class, but that was HS I guess), but yeah, it can be annoying when someone says that about everything, I have a friend from HS that does that, and I know she’s lying. Or when they say “I thought it was really easy” when everyone else said it was hard, and then they get a not-so-perfect grade…you know they were just trying to sound smart and impress people.</p>

That’s really distracting to other people…I hope I don’t have classes where people do that!</p>
<p>DJ, in my case that was often true. I’d get hundreds on math and physics tests with little studying. Sorry!</p>
<p>Which is not to say that I never studied much, but many times I would not have the time to study for a particular test or I would have forgotten the day.</p>
<p>I don’t think taking notes necessarily corresponds to getting good grades. IMO, It seems like taking notes is distracting when you have to focus on copying the notes on to paper instead of just listening and absorbing the information. Not sure about others, but my school sold notes in pdf files for certain courses, I’d go to lectures and just listen rather than take notes.</p>
<p>In any case, what’s really annoying in class is when people talk or whisper loudly throughout an entire lecture and don’t shut up even when others around them are glaring.</p>

<p>Hate when people talk/gossip in a small class. In a large lecture, I don’t really care since I can sit somewhere else, but damn, it is so rude to the professor and the other students in the class.</p>
<p>browsing facebook, talking about how hammered they got last night, pretending to understand plato, attending shows and music festivals, dancing at said shows/festivals, wearing clothes with ironic text, volunteering, sunglasses, faux-leftist posturing, joining clubs, majoring in business, speaking, breathing</p>
<p>Sometimes I get annoyed when someone asks really stupid questions. Something that I feel everyone should know already. I know it’s not really something I should be annoyed about, since the class is for everyone to learn, but I still do get annoyed about it sometimes. </p>
<p>I do get annoyed when people ask an instructor to step through simple math problems. If a class involves math, people should be prepared through the level of math it requires. Countless times I’ve heard people in classes ask instructors to step through basic algebra.</p>
<p>The only thing that has annoyed me at all is when people always have an obnoxious (usually ********) comment. English students, pah!</p>
<p>And I can’t understand the people who write down every single thing said in a seminar.
The seminar is about engaging and discussing, which looks harder to do if you’re too busy working on the transcript. But it’s their business, not mine.</p>
