Is the answer to the question permitted to take into account the campus surroundings?

If no, then I can get behind Yale being beautiful–its buildings are spectacular.

If yes, I don’t see how Yale can overcome the ugliness of the streets surrounding it. New Haven is really a dump.

I have always thought that Middlebury had the most beautiful campus (ok I went there, so I’m biased). In the last six years though I’ve done the college visit thing with 4 kids and been to a lot of schools. And there are a lot of beautiful college campuses. But my favorite…

Sewanee: University of the South. Its older buildings are modeled after Oxbridge (that Gothic cathedral look) and they’ve done a marvelous job of integrating the newer buildings with the old ones. (That’s not so easy by the way–some of Middlebury’s new buildings are too big for their sites in my view.) The grounds are also attractively landscaped.

The University of Richmond is absolutely beautiful! Every square inch of the grounds is meticulously manicured, there are hundreds of thousands of flowers and flowering shrubs scattered throughout the campus. It looks like a country club!

There’s a reason virtually every picture of Stanford is centered around the Memorial church. The campus isn’t ugly, but it’s nothing to write home about, in my opinion.

I’m also going to have to disagree with doctorb about UNC. I am a huge fan of the school, and parts of it (forest theater, Coker, the quad between Old East and Franklin, etc.) are very nice, but overall the campus is not stunningly attractive.

Since others are posting links, I’ll post a few for Berry. It always comes as a surprise to people that schools outside the top 25 can have beautiful campuses.

For a small college Mt. Holyoke has a Frederick Law Olmstead landscaped campus with two lakes, waterfalls, and lots of old gothic looking buildings

After Stanford is probably Rice. (I’m surprised no one has mentioned it.) But Berry is growing in me. Never really heard of Berry before but its campus is amazing, based on pix posted by IBClass.

Can’t even put it into words. Not only is it gorgeous, it just has a certain indescribable atmosphere that every other college I’ve seen lacked.

University of the Pacific was voted #5 in front of Princeton. It’s a gorgeous campus with brick, ivy covered buildings. My daughter really liked the looks of it. She’s just not into Stockton. :(
