Most Beautiful College Libraries

I second this.
I also liked the Columbia library.

Wow, novi! Where is that in relation to the '60s modern airport terminal (aka Ross)

Just to the north and west. Personally I like the eclectic mix. You can see Ross in the upper hand side of the picture entitled, “As seen from the Grad Library.” That is the view looking to the south.

Here are some views of Ross as well to give you a better idea of how it is situated in relation to the Law School.

<a href=“U-M Web Hosting”>U-M Web Hosting;

^ So across the street… looks like they used similar (color) stonework to tie in. Ross looks okay on the outside…the interior is a disaster, IMO.

^^^^Not at all UCB. You just don’t like the carpet and furniture in the lobby area. It is loaded with fine art work.

Greetings:

I can’t believe Mount Holyoke’s library isn’t on this list - it is truly gorgeous. Still, I’m sure there are many, many university libraries that are beautiful but just didn’t make the list.

Yeah, but it always pays to make a great first impression… ;)

^^^The front doors are very nice. ;-)

The George Peabody library at Johns Hopkins missed the Top 10 (it came in at #13). But come on – how many other college libraries are in demand as a venue for weddings[/url”>http://www.peabodyevents.library.jhu.edu/photogallery.html]weddings ?

I agree - the reading room at the Mount Holyoke library is stunning, and I always loved the library court.

Ohio State’s library is brand spankin’ new and I LOVE it. I almost died when I walked inside last Spring.
It’s not gothic, but still amazing.

Classical Revival or Romanesque Revival? Take your pick…;)

Most of Cal’s library is underground: <a href=“Wrong shelf. | UC Berkeley Library”>Wrong shelf. | UC Berkeley Library;

Ohio Stat’s Lib is gorgeous. If only it’s bigger, I would have ranked it #1 in my list.

Georgetown’s OLD library is my favorite…I can’t remember the name of it though.

^^ “Ohio Stat’s Lib is gorgeous. If only it’s bigger, I would have ranked it #1 in my list.”

While TOSU’s William Oxley Thompson Library may not be the largest collegiate library in the nation, it is certainly on par with other reknown "main libraries’ such as Widener (Harvard) and Doe Memorial (Berkeley) in terms of floor space (306,000 sq ft - Not counting the atrium & the stack tower) and collection (~1 Million books in this building alone). Here are more pictures of the library on ■■■■■■■■■■, where one gets to see the penthouse study room with the birdeye view of the entire campus on the 11th floor of the stack tower.

Go Bucks!! lol

i think the reason it has larger floor space is because it has many floors. when i said bigger, i actually meant, wider floor space, as in larger horizontally, instead of vertically. it is quite beautiful as it is. but i wish it was wider and larger.

I liked the Princeton library the best. It felt warm and bright. The other libraries were all so dark, hollow, and empty.

@SparkEye
I enjoy the modern feel of OSU’s library but the ceiling is just too low for my liking. Low ceilings = less luxury and more stringent budgets.

@RML, Gotcha!!

Still, one must realize that tOSU library is shaped like a square (due to the 60s’ addition of the stack tower and 70s the rear) rather than the original retangular library shape. Hence, even without counting the floor space of the center stack tower, the ground floor space is massive enough!! See:

@sentimentGX4,

Ur… that’s $109 million spent just on the restoration/renovation alone…(name me one college in the world that had spent as much on library renovation alone?!) FYI, there are only a handful of colleges in America that spend $ like tOSU in terms of budget and scale imho.

Of course, perhaps you were referring to the 11th floor penthouse studying room (top of the stack tower), the ceiling looks otherwise fine to me! In fact, if you pay more attention, you might have noticed that the courtyard / atrium is part of an open-tray incline ceiling design which seems very inviting to me.

It might have something to do with having over 50,000 students on campus. ;-)

^^ Perhaps!! But, I don’t see ASU or UCF doing the same or even close!! ;p
