Most Effective ACT Prep

I have a daughter (rising Senior) who scored 26 on ACT which she took in the Spring when she had Mono. Was hoping for a 30. Bought the Red ACT test prep book for her to work on self-paced this summer and she has been great about spending the time doing the work. She is starting to get anxious about the test, college applications, etc. and asked if she could get a tutor this summer to help her though some of the problems, particularly math. Any suggestions on the best method and bang for your buck on ACT on-line tutoring/prep? Would also consider private tutor here in Denver and have reached out to a math teacher at school. Any advice greatly appreciated. Prefer private instruction/tutor and not one size fits all model. Anything to help minimize her anxiety with prepping and taking the test.

I got a private tutor and it helped me out a lot. My initial practice test I got a 28 and started tutoring form there. My first ACT I got a 31 and the next time I got a 32 (with a perfect English score). A private tutor is best especially if you are nervous for the test. It is really helpful to learn one on one about test taking strategies that work best for you. It’s definitely worth the extra money to get a tutor rather than just using books or going online. Best of luck to your daughter!

Calikid: Those increases are impressive-- How far before the test did you start prepping?

Just a note of caution–be careful who you hire. Some increases in score are just due to familiarity with the test and not necessarily the tutor. There aren’t any official training certifications for becoming a tutor so ask questions and hang around during the sessions to make sure that the time is well spent and the tutor is well informed. I haven’t used this site, but they offer some clear videos to help with strategies for test taking: https://act.magoosh.com/
Good luck!!
