Most Frustrating Thing about High School

Real talk doh, seeing all the baddies go out with jerks

Frustrating Things: People who continue to assert that they are the smartest when they have literally nothing to back it up, and then proceed to say “grades dont matter” “scores dont matter” when you attempt to compare scores. Yes they are not the only thing in the world, but as of yet they are a pretty good indicator of “intelligence”

People who like teachers because they are easy, or hate them because they are hard.

Teachers who cant string together a coherent sentence, and when they do, end up giving you incorrect information that they dont correct until the 5 mins before the test.

People who think that math is the only subject anybody should learn and english and history are useless.

People who think that math is useless.

When smart people dont take advanced classes in an attempt to fit in.

When people say that its impossible to have a rigorous schedule and still have free time, yet have never had a rigorous schedule themselves.

Probably more i cant think up right now…

@OneMoreGuy‌

Why don’t you just say that all of humanity is frustrating and be done with it? :-j

Haha you summed it up much better!

I’d say humanity /is/ pretty frustrating, but what can you do?

Also, secretly (or not so secretly) judging each other. All. The. Time.
I think we are all guilty of it though… : /

@chocolatelover12‌
I know we are all guilty 8-|

One frustrating thing for me (I’m a sophomore, by the way) is the competition vibe among the high-achieving students. I mean, my high school isn’t the most academically advanced school in the area, but there are a handful of students who are always trying to outsmart each other and get the highest GPA possible. I really hate this. I guess you could say I’m smart-ish (I have one B and the rest are A+'s), but it really annoys me that some students think that GPA determines your intelligence. It’s a factor, of course, but it’s not the only factor.

For me, the most frustrating thing is being dismissed by adults and fellow high-schoolers alike, who say, “Oh, cyber-school, that’s easy, you must not do any work”. Obviously, I’m not doing any work when I’m sitting in front of the computer typing away on essays/projects/discussion forums from 7:30 to 2PM every weekday, almost without stopping…It’s not truly frustrating because I thankfully don’t need other people’s recognition to “validate” my accomplishments, but it’s annoying to have my education dismissed by those around me simply because it’s online.

Getting up so early. I’m up at 6:00, and that’s later than other people that I know.

There’s no baddies in any of my classes

One of the worst things about HS is the track system. In Utah, it’s especially pronounced. In order to get into middle school “honors classes” you have to take an expensive test. If you don’t take it, and your parents don’t complain to the principal, you have no chance of going to the honors classes over the duration of middle school. Those who don’t get on the “honors” track are HEAVILY dissuaded from taking any hs honors/ap/ib offerings because it will bring down the letter grade of the school and reduce its funding.

I’ve met juniors and seniors in “regular” classes who haven’t even heard of ap/ib classes, who are only BARELY aware of standardized testing. The counselors do a horrible job.

@moogooloo‌

According to my mom, the tracking starts in elementary, when they separate students by reading level. If you are in a low track in middle school, it’s pretty much a done deal if your parents don’t say anything, you are low track ( AKA the trash can) for the rest of your life in Connecticut.

I also don’t think the children in the ‘gifted’ are more naturally intelligent than anyone else, they just have more motivation and incentive to do better.

@Princess563 I agree with you in the matter of “gifted” students. In 3rd grade I was qualified as a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) student at my public school because of my nearly perfect scores on the OLSAT test. But in my 4th grade year I moved to a private school, which did not establish the GATE program. At that school everyone had the motivation to work hard and do their best in everything.

Now I’m a sophomore in high school and have transferred back to public schooling this year (the private school I went to was a kindergarten-9th grade school). It turns out that there are a lot of smart people not in the GATE program–the reason why they’re not in GATE is that they don’t have that drive to work their hardest.

So what I’m saying is that some people can be geniuses and do horribly in high school because of their lack of motivation, and other people don’t have to be that smart but get A’s because of their ambition. Titles, grades, and GPA are not the only determining factors of intelligence. But then again there are smart people who work hard and get good grades as well…

bullies. they were not physically bullying me but their words were sharp. I fought back and drew my boundary then after that I became friends with most of them.

The loneliness. I have no close friends, and the ones I have pretty much ignore me all the time. I don’t think they’re really my friends.

Not being able to escape preconceived notions about me from freaking elementary school. And people who don’t like me because I enjoy answering questions in class. I’m sorry that I enjoy a challenge.

OK I need some more venting to do.

I have this one teacher–who is good as a person, attitude wise–but he gives A LOT of work, and I mean A LOT. “You have a formal essay and a project as the 2nd part of this assignment, due next week.” Alright cool - I can handle that, if it wasn’t for the fact that he also gives daily writing assignments that he expects to be at least a page long. (Did I also mention the other classes I took, sir?)

But here’s the part that frustrates me: he doesn’t even keep up with his own grading until the very last minute when teachers are supposed to submit in their grades for the students’ report cards. Like, I’d like to know how you’ve been grading my assignments so I can ask you what I did wrong (because he never hands our assignments back anyways), but I can’t ask you if you grade them last minute???

There are also times where he promised would give us a long reading to do at home so we can discuss it in class over the long weekend, but then e-mails it to us on the night before. His excuse was that it’s good preparation for college, which I guess I can accept. But I really hope professors in college aren’t exactly like him, where they grade students’ work last minute and not give us a chance to even reflect on what we did. I mean, I don’t think I would have such a big issue if I were in college, since I’m sure I won’t be taking 8 classes every single day and come home late. But as a high-schooler with a teacher like that? That’s a no from me.

Did anyone ever see a post where someone pointed out the fact that students are expected to do hour-long homework (multiplied by the number of classes you have), be involved with extra curricular activities you enjoy, still maintain a stable social life, and get enough sleep for yourself? Yeah, that’s physically impossible. The work has gotten me so anxious that I go straight to do my school work the minute I get home, and I’m so focused on it that I don’t even shower until 11pm. Sheesh.

OH YEAH, and ontop of all that, seniors are expected to apply for financial aid and scholarships around this time of the year. It's like my teachers are purposely trying to screw the seniors over. I honestly don't know how others do it, and I have so much respect for them at the moment.

Vent over. I’ll suck it up for 5 more months, if I don’t die from the lack of sleep `til then.

Okay yeah sorry, i have some ranting to do. Hope you guys understand lol

  1. Disrespect towards teachers. Yes, I understand that some teachers do deserve criticism, and it is okay to not like all your teachers, but some students dislike teachers for no legitimite reason. Why cant the students reflect on their misbehavings first and then realize why the teachers arent that nice to them? It isnt always the teachers faults. A kid from one of my classes took a picture of my teacher teaching and wrote a caption that imitates the way she speaks (she has an accent), and the comments are so mean and rude. Teachers are humans, and they are naturally meaner to students who dont listen in class and disrupt the class.
  2. Arrogant kids. Im sorry im not smart, but you dont have to rub it in my face. And stop trivializing the stuff im good at (aka the stuff youre bad at) and emphasizing only the stuff yourr good at (aka the stuff im bad at).
  3. People who take advantage of me. If we dont talk at school, then dont facebook me and ask me questions about the homework/ project/ test etc. (esp if we arent even fb friends) I know they have other close friends to get help from, but they just ask me for help because I look nice enough to help them with anything. If i am stuck with something and dont have any close friends to ask, I suck it up. Its rude for them to talk to me only when they need me and completely ignore me when they see me in class.

These are the top three. i dont think i should continue hahaah

Kind of in a situation opposite of yours: There are some people I know who talk to me in school only so they don’t look lonely to the other people surrounding them. But when I text them when we’re not in school, they take forever to respond, unless it’s homework related things that THEY need help on. If I ask them a question about school stuff, it’ll take them at least 3 hours to reply. I understand that you can be busy sometimes and can’t reply right away, but almost every single day? I doubt it, honey.

But then when I genuinely can’t reply because I’ve been busy, they complain to others about how “I don’t text back.” Puh-lease.
