What are some schools that you would define as "nerdy", or to put it in more flattering terms, intellectual? Where people's first priority is learning (not grades; thats quite different)?

There is a thread just on this topic on the Parents Forum.

Carnegie Mellon, U chicago, MIT, Ga tech, RPI
are all very traditionally nerdy.

Not surprisingly, nerdiness comes in many different flavors. Some schools, like The College of William and Mary, are super academically focused without being science focused(not to say that those other schools are only tech, they also have great business and good liberal arts/sciences, especially CMU and Chicago).

UC San Diego ftdubz

Reed, St. John’s (MD), Caltech

Caltech, U Chicago, MIT
I think most engineering schools are like that.

If you are female, Bryn Mawr & Wellesley probably rank a bit higher for nerdiness than Barnard, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith, but all would definitely be in the nerdy zone.

My friend at UChicago says that it is a very nerdy school as compared to others.

CalTech and MIT.

Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)

Swarthmore, Harvey Mudd

Carleton, Reed, Lewis and Clark, Knox, Smith, Kenyon.

Bump for RIT. Visit the Rochester campus, then visit any of these other schools and tell me that RIT isn’t nerdier.

To be perfectly clear, I won’t make the claim that the average RIT student is smarter than the average UChic/MIT/Caltech student, but nerdier? I have almost no reservation.

Williams and Mary

Caltech, MIT, Harvey Mudd, Chicago and Reed are probably the worse.

Or the “best.” One’s view of this depends upon one’s degree of nerdiness, I suppose. See “Revenge of the Nerds” to confirm.

This one’s making me laugh. The crowd seems to be really nailing a whole bunch. Several might merit quibbling, but in general, I’d have to agree w/ most of these. In Pittsburgh, the locals, referring to the coeds, are convinced, no harm intended, that CMU means … “Chinese, Married, Ugly.” In various combinations. Still, I know one very cute, perky …and definitely nerdy … young lady who goes there. Drama queen. lol Not sure I buy GA Tech. How about Webb, Olin, New School, Santa Cruz (“Banana Slugs”), Evergreen, Sewanee, Oglethorpe, Union, Haverford, St.Johns Jr. (Santa Fe), IIT.

UChicago isnt an engineering school dumbo

sewannee nerdy?

omg yes! aka U.of the South! Talk of presumptious! do the honor students still wear cap and gowns to class? (doesn’t matter) … “the domain!” lol Does not speak well of Episcopalianism … altho it does illumine why so many of the dioceses are departing for association w/ 3rd world bishops.
