Buy the blanket!
$300 doesn’t seem expensive for a blanket! Pottery Barn has blankets for nearly $300 - you aren’t that far outside the usual market range!
That’s a handwoven blanket. $300 is very little for the amount of time that went into making it. And it’s gorgeous. Buy it!
And another vote to buy the blanket!
Our big splurge. Grad school for both kids. In one case, we had fully saved for it. In another, we had to supplement. Both kids are doing extremely well professionally. Totally worth it to enable them to start off strong in the world.
My big splurge. I had closed a big deal and gotten a large success fee. ShawWife noticed that in our social milieu, a lot of the men in their fifties either got a red sports car or replaced the wife with a younger model. She said, “Splurge. Get a car you would love. Just whatever model you come back with, it should have wheels and not legs.” I was going to get a red Tesla Model S, but we always convert a garage building into a painting studio for ShawWife. Didn’t make sense to charge a Tesla outside in a New England winter. So, I got a BMW 335 GT with several performance additions (so not an M3 but drives very nicely). I still love the car 7 years later. Definitely cost less than the Tesla Model S.
For ShawWife? She doesn’t spend money on herself willingly. Her friends are always trying to take her shopping for clothes. Even when she finds the perfect thing, she returns it because she says it is too expensive. But, she’s an avid cyclist. We got a really nice Specialized Roubaix or something like that. Disk brakes. Really nice components. I have a somewhat lesser model. She loves it. Uses it a lot.
If you are going to use the blanket, get it. Use it. Your husband will be happy you are so happy.
When I got my first bonus at my first real, grown up job, I bought myself a $1,000 Movado gold watch. It has been resting in my jewelry box going on 20 years.
If you would use the blanket more than I wear my watch, go for it!!
When I was in college, I bought a pair of $100 velvet jeans. That was a huge splurge for me, but I felt so amazing when I wore them.
Buy the blanket!
I haven’t done it yet, but soon! I want to buy a countertop nugget ice machine for about $500. That’s the kind of ice that Sonic uses.
I have to tell you, those ice machines look so great!
I wouldn’t call this outrageous but it was definitely a splurge…a touch activated kitchen faucet. Any other upgrades in my kitchen will be expensive because I’ll want to keep going. If it’s been a while and you’re still thinking of the blanket, it’s meant to be yours. The delayed gratification wait period has been met. Enjoy!
A fancy pickup truck; Limited edition, leather seats, bigger engine and power everything. More than I needed, but exactly what I wanted.
18 years later, she is still running perfectly and I have never once regretted the purchase. To this day, every time I climb in I think, “Whoa!! My new truck!!”
A car lift in the garage.
I’ve always been very frugal; when we bought our retirement house last year, it had 9 different types of flooring in a one story house. We picked a beautiful reclaimed style luxury wide plank floor. First time I’ve ever splurged on anything. I still stare at it every time I walk in the house.
Natural, hand made, not mass produced. Buy the Blanket!
I don’t buy many things for myself. Travel would probably be the most expensive, especially my running related trips. But the most outrageous thing I purchased for myself was a $99 introductory flying lesson for my 40th bday. It was two hours long and I got to take off, fly around, and land! Ok, the instructor helped I’m sure. The plane was outfitted like a driver’s education car. We both had controls, but he told me I did it.
I don’t care to actually get my license. It’s too $$$ and the rate of fatal accidents for private small planes is too high for me. But I love to fly and I wanted to say I did it once. I’m so glad I did. I rode an adrenaline high all afternoon, and it still makes me smile remembering the day.
You can buy the blanket if you have the money because every one is suggesting you to buy!
My dog. Buy the blanket. Support the craftspeople and artists.
As a former flautist, I can say that that head joint certainly made a difference. Nice gift, Mom!
When I was in college (started off as a music major), my only so-so flute was in the shop. The flute professor loaned me his gold flute (just like James Galway’s) for a recital. It sounded so good, I wanted to cry. After the recital, a lot of my peers told me “wow, I didn’t realize what a beautiful tone you have!”
Alas, after my flute was repaired, I had to return the gold flute. It was hard to do!
For a brief moment in time, I was a Costume Designer on a few independent features. My first paycheck ($500-ish, back in the day) I splurged on a pair of Oliver Peoples tinted prescription sunglasses. Wore them until they broke. When they did, they were mourned. Glasses are part of my visual identity.
There are sewing machine systems for the home that have an MSRP of over $15k these days.
Enjoy your blanket!
At the time it felt like a splurge. My youngest D danced since she was 4 and joined a preprofessional ballet company around 8th grade and began dance en pointe. Over the years we probably spent over $2000 in pointe shoes. In the end it was an investment. She knew she wasn’t going to be a professional dancer but went to college as a dance major and received about $3200 per year in scholarships. She’s now a DPT student.
