most overrated/underrated college?

^^^English is obviously not your first language, so I’ll to have to try to explain this to you. To say that you don’t hear much good, is EXACTLY the same as saying it is bad. It’s like me saying that I don’t hear much good overall about Duke engineering. Now does that rub you? By the way, engineering and business are both considered stellar at Michigan AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL. Ross is more thought of nationally at this level than it is at the graduate level. Same for graduate engineering, although both schools are definitely top 10-15. Which just goes back to my original point. How is Michigan overrated? It has virtually no academic weaknesses in it’s myriad of schools and disciplines.

Now now… let’s not be bitter

Yes, sorry for the slam on those two fine schools. My sarcastic comment was more directed at the author of the post that I was referring to.

Overrated: Privates

Underrated: Publics (especially by usnews)

Perhaps there should be a different methodology when evaluating public universities vs private universities. I don’t see how a school, such as UNC or Berkley, who’s budgets are dictated by a a state legislator, could ever compete with a school like Harvard or Stanford, when endowments are a huge part of ranking methodologies.

Wow…okay. UMich is not overrated. Happy? And thanks for randomly bashing both my alma mater and myself. You really need to learn to chill out.

I gotta be honest…I feel like there are the “real world” views and the “CC world” views. These are mine - just my opinions.

Overrated on CC:
-The Ivies, especially Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Stanford goes here, too. I think they’re absolutely fabulous schools, but I also feel like a lot of the people here think they’re the be-all and end-all of colleges.

Underrated on CC:
-All liberal arts colleges (with the possible exception of Williams/Amherst/Swarthmore)
-More or less all public universities, but particularly UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the College of William and Mary.
-Tufts, Wake Forest, Emory, and Rice

“Wow…okay. UMich is not overrated. Happy? And thanks for randomly bashing both my alma mater and myself. You really need to learn to chill out.”

Well, that’s rjkofnovi for you. hahaha. But you were right, UMich is definitely overrated. hides

the truth is most people here on CC think that if you get into an ivy you’re the second coming of jesus christ. everyone here is always talking up HYP and UPenn and Dartmouth and it’s pretty ridiculous. are these great schools? of course. is harvard the best? maybe. but there are A LOT of other colleges out there that you can go to and become just as educated and successful.

“Well, that’s rjkofnovi for you. hahaha. But you were right, UMich is definitely overrated. *hides”"

I’m still waiting to hear how Michigan is overrated? and waiting, and waiting…

Georgia:

Overrated- Valdosta, Armstrong Atlantic

Underated- Berry, GA Southern, GA State

I could frame this…haha. SO TRUE.

^Second that. I can’t wait for CC high schoolers to realize how little the outside world cares about where you went to school.

gotta agree with rjk, especially given what has developed in the last 24 hours. Wake Forest and USC ahead of UMich? Is that a joke?

Wake Forest is an amazing, amazing university and so is USC. Why exactly shouldn’t they be ranked above Michigan? By the way, I would have no problem if Michigan was ranked ahead of these two schools either because I think they all belong in the same tier.

Um, where to start? A 50% acceptance rate, large class sizes, small endowment per capita, a student body that is academically on par with URochester/BC, low alumni giving, high student to faculty ratio, poor placement into the top law/med/biz/PhD programs/fellowships in comparison to elite privates, etc. etc.

Michigan has a lot of great things going for it too like its top-notch faculty and highly ranked academic departments. But it definitely has some glaring weaknesses at the undergraduate level though…

So given those reasons and a ranking of #27, what colleges deserve to be ranked higher than UMich for it to be “overrated (i.e. overranked)”?

Mich has great placement and at par with several top privates- what the EFF are u saying? Its definitely a top 20-25 school but I agree its not a top 10.

Wake Forest just took the WashU position as being the most overrated Top 25 college of the decade. Or maybe the Georgetown position.

My opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the USNWR rankings. Schools like Michigan and Cal get way too much attention; people don’t realize the quality of education that Emory and Rice have to offer. And when I say people, I mean both the people where I’m from and the general population.

Haters gonna hate…

on 8/8 i posted wake as underrated. then US news listed them as top 25. coincidence? i don’t think so.
