Most overrated/underrated colleges in the nation

I think more state schools should be in the top 20! especially Berk, Honorable mentions UVA, UNC, UCLA.

What exactly do you mean by “gaming the system to the extreme,” phead?

I’m just wondering… I don’t really know how USNWR works (if that’s what you’re referring to).

Extrasupervery-- I believe that The Chronicle ([The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/)) has done quite a bit reporting on that.

Essentially, WUSTL adjusted the way it admitted its class (ratio with ED, use of waitlist, etc) to intentionally increase USNWR view of the university. They’re typically seen as going to some of the more extreme lengths in changing practice to fit the ranking model. Their leap from being around 50 to being in the top 10 in a very short period of time is one of the criticisms of USNWR, since it is generally felt that there were not significant changes in the quality of education being offered to accompany some of the larger leaps, although those improvements have come now, lagging behind and largely as an effect of the monstrous increase in perceived prestige. Whether those improvements have actually filled the gap created with WUSTL’s leap is hard to say, but most observers seem to think it’s not there yet.

overrated: USC, dartmouth, BC, NYU,
Underrated: brown, tufts, cornell

UCSD is very underrated

BRANDEIS is OVERRATED so is YESHIVA

Way Overrated: Chicago, Brandeis

Overated: WashU, Berkeley, Michigan
Underrated:UCLA, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia, William and Mary

Way Underrated: Kansas, Alabama

Well, Sean, when half of your graduating class applies to Boston University, while fewer than a fifth apply to Boston College, it has to be overrated to an extent.

I am talking locally, however. Now, Northeastern is an example of an underrated school.

overrated:usc duke, dartmouth,BC
underrated:cornell,berkeley, UCSD, u of a

erm… false.

overrated: those schools that only rank well in usnews and sell the image of “undergraduate focus” but upon closer examination, isn’t really great at anything, examples: notre dame, boston college, wustl, emory, vandy.

underrated: the top liberal arts schools, elite publics, trade schools (rpi, cmu)

Wow, Cornell seems to be the consensus most underrated school in the country. I agree, its one of the most comprehensive universities in the world with well ranked programs across the board, underrated because of a minisculy higher acceptance rate and a little lower test scores, who cares. I love the mention of UCSD too for being underrated. It is an awesome school, should be a definite Top 30, very underrated.
I’ll throw in one overrated: NYU

Consensus is that bc is the most overrated

Put Harvard on that list, too.

psh, coming from the Bryn Mawr matriculator. Get bullied by a cheerleader?

erm, sports schools are usually underrated, ie UGA, UF, USC (CA), PSU

Overrated: Duke, Notre Dame, Emory, Harvard, UPenn, and WUSTL
Underrated: Cornell, UChicago, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Rice, UCBerkeley, UMich, UNC, and UIUC

OR we could venture outside of the realm of the top 50 schools in the nation! If we’re really considering Cornell to underrated with a whopping number fourteen ranking nationally, then what do we think of the rest of the colleges and universities? Are they simply ranked appropriately?

I simply think that this talk of over/underrating seems to be more of a chance for prestige evaluations of top schools, which I find immensely boring.

Agree - BC totally overrated - rah rah football - who gives s**t
Georgetown just right - mid 20s of rankings - nothing more. Certainly not in top tier. SFS and Gov’t department is solid but the rest is mediocre at best. Should anyone go to G’town to do graduate work in anything other than Gov’t, law or medicine.
Very Underrated - The Publics - Berkley, U Michigan, UVA, UNC or even the canadian schools Mcgill, U of T, UBC - best values for the money.
LACs - glorified academic country clubs. Endowments have tanked so now they’re all living beyond their means. The next few years will be a time of reckoning for these schools as more families decide they can’t afford or refuse to pay $200,000 for little Johnny or Susie to have the “perfect” college experience. The triumph of marketing over reason. How else can you justify 5% to 8% annual increases in tuition to fund bloated administrations(as was cited in a recent NYT article) and the 10th new building project.

lantzk STAY OUT OF THIS! the below schools are so overrated

BC

Emory

Tufts

Brandeis

Yeshiva

Vanderbilt

WUSTL

we need to have a petition to have BC pulled out of the 34th spot now!!! WHOS WITH ME!!! YAY

University of Texas is way deflated in US News due to its top 10% automatic admission. And it’s underrated to most people I know out of Texas just because it’s in Texas.
