what are the most popular majors at Lafayette? I applied for the International economics and commerce one. I hope that is not popular :x

Hey please1,

As I told fencersmother in a previous post, "Admissions officers will say that some of the most popular majors are (in no particular order) Math, Chemistry, Gov/Law, Biology, Economics & Business, Engineering, English, and Psychology."

The International Economics and Commerce major consists mainly of courses from the Economics & Business department and of the foreign language of your choosing (French, German, Spanish).

In terms of what that means for your chances, well...we get a good number of prospective E&B majors each year due mainly to impressive job placement resources based extensively out of NYC.

on the supplement it says that admission is not based on academic interest...so does that mean if I chose a popular major, my chances of getting in would decrease?

tanveer149,

Although admission may not be based on academic interest, your intended major as indicated on the supplement is taken into consideration. Admissions officers at any college would never divulge such information, but it's damn true.

Let's put it this way: if you choose a more popular major, you are definitely not helping your chances of admission. For instance, we can only take so many prospective Engineers based largely on the optimum enrollment balances of introductory Engineering courses as mandated by the Registrar.

Interesting note: fairly recently, The College of New Jersey was straightforward in telling qualified prospective Biology applicants that they would be admitted only if they decided to switch intended majors from Biology to something else. If that doesn't show that academic interest is at the very least a consideration when making admissions decisions, I don't know what does!

uh oh. so are my chances minimized because i applied for the international economics and commerce major? if i want to switch my intended major can i call lafayette and let them know?

My S wrote admissions a note and told them he wanted to change his intended major. Admissions folks were very happy to accommodate him - and I think it helped his chances since he went from a fairly popular one, to a less popular major.

please1,

I honestly don't think it will make much of a difference whether you switch or not. Admissions officers realize that applicants may not be committed to their selection, but if it would make you feel better by switching, go for it.

If, on the other hand, you have been involved in activities related to that prospective major or wrote an essay on it, I would definitely advise against changing it.
