<p>And MIT excels in mainly hard sciences and engineering. Berkeley excels in the hard sciences, engineering, social sciences, arts, humanities, etc.</p>

<p>That's because Berkeley doesn't rank in a few of them. Overall, though, Berkeley had 35 programs ranked in the top 10, whereas Stanford had 32. I think it's safe to say that Berkeley, Stanford, and Harvard (and to a slightly lesser extent, MIT) are the three grad school powerhouses.</p>
