Most "scenic" campuses

Williams is profoundly beautiful. Williamstown is a pristine New England village in a valley of the Berkshire mountains. It's lovely in all seasons, but autumn is exceptional.

thethoughtprocess,

I don't see a river running through Edens on the campus map. How wide or how long is it? Where does it start and where does it lead to?

Scripps College

I'm beginning to think thethoughtprocess doesn't even go to Duke. There is no river on the Duke campus. The closest river is the Eno, and it doesn't run through the campus.

jack, please, you make me laugh. Like I said, I kayaked through the Edens river my sophomore year. Edens is a residence hall at Duke, located near the forest away from the main quad. Check out our student government constitution (first paragraph).

http://rlhs.studentaffairs.duke.edu/images/edens_quad_council_constitution.pdf

See, it talks about the Edens river.

Also, check out this column which references it in its second paragraph.

http://media.www.dukechronicle.com/media/storage/paper884/news/2006/09/06/Columns/Senior.Wisdom-2258854.shtml

I didn't realize you were an expert on the Duke campus. I also think its hilarious I'm trying to prove to you that this river exists, considering I lived by it for a year...way to call me out though!

No apologies needed.

Here is another picture, the bridge you see is on top of the river:

http://rlhs.studentaffairs.duke.edu/images/Edens_1C.jpg

That's okay; no apology offered. ;) Again, could you just provide a map? I'm really very curious about this "river." Duke obviously owns Duke Forest (which can't really be considered part of the actual campus), and the Eno River or the Haw River might run along some part of Duke Forest, though I'm not even sure about that. Could you be more specific about this river--perhaps provide a link to a map that shows it? I have never heard of an "Edens River." (Is this just a joke I'm not getting, or are you serious??)

jack,

Do you really not believe that the Edens river exists? Like I said, it goes through the Duke campus in the Edens quadrangle. Its a small river, probably not big enough for a map, but big enough to kayak in. And I've given you multiple references proving its existence.

Also, you keep saying you've never heard of the Edens river. Thats fine, because you don't go to Duke. This river flows through the Edens quadrangle, which is a residence hall at Duke. Unless you've visited Duke's Edens quadrangle, you probably haven't seen this river. Its not the Delaware, its Edens. Its named after a Duke dorm, so I wouldn't expect the general public to know of it....

And I have never heard of the Eno and Haw river - because I don't care about rivers that much. I just know that I spent a year living by the Edens river in my dorm, and I kayaked in it. And fed ducks sometimes when they came around. I'm being totally serious by the way.

BTW, its man made, and Google maps doesn't have it yet (the image of Duke from Google map is from the 1990s apparently...since the area around the Edens quadrangle was still under construction in the picture...and since I lived there in 2005 I'm fairly sure the picture is outdated).

The fact that I got to live by a river and a forest, and only a 5 minute walk away from the Duke Gardens, speaks to how scenic Duke is.

Definitely University of Colorado - Boulder
and what about Colorado College? pikes peak..

Unfortunately, UC Berkeley really doesn't "look out over the SF bay." If you stand in certain buildings and lean over balconies and crane your neck to the side, you can catch a glimpse of the Golden Gate and a bit of the bay, and I definitely do think it's a beautiful campus, but this characterization seems a bit of a stretch (trust me, I'd be happy if it did look out over the bay in an obvious sense).

I'd add Loyola Marymount, which is on a hill that looks over Los Angeles. The view can often be smoggy, but on a clear day, it's dramatic and impressive. Also, Marymount College (also SoCal), which sits on a cliff overlooking the Pacific (I haven't actually seen the campus in person, but aerial photos of the campus suggest that the views are pretty impressive).

I also second Scripps College in particular, but Claremont in general. On clear days (the key), the San Gabriel Mountains are a beautiful backdrop. Coming back to campus after winter break was one of my favorite things ever...snow-covered mountains and towering palm trees all in the same view.

I've been incredibly impressed with photos of some northeastern campuses...rolling hills, vibrant autumns, lots of natural beauty.

All of these, as they say in the East, are out West:

University of Washington

University of Arizona

University of Colorado

University of Montana

jack: I lived in Edens1C sophomore year that is across from the dormitory that thoughtprocess provided a picture of.

There is, in fact, a small river stream that runs between the two. I'm not sure if it is officially called "Edens River." In fact I do not know what it is called, it is rather small, but it does exist.

thoughtprocess: Haha you went kayaking in it? Duke actually lets us do that?

I wouldn't say that Duke is any more or less "scenic" than many well-appointed college campuses, but ND?

Colorado State: http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/Psychology/images/index.jpg

I'm sure it's been mentioned. I somehow forgot it, but the most gorgeous I've ever seen--the Air Force Academy: http://z.about.com/d/gosw/1/5/P/AcademyView.jpg

I guess what the thethoughtprocess called "river" is more like a short canal.

Ah, okay. Well, I can believe there might be a little man-made creek or canal that might ultimately(?) lead to a real river somewhere-- that makes sense.

lol, most pointless argument ever. whether or not there is a river running through duke's campus it most definitely may be categorized as one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation.

Williams
Claremont Colleges
Cornell
Pepperdine
Point Loma Nazarene University
UCLA
UCSD (especially SIO)
Dartmouth
Westpoint
UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Barbara

UCSB easily wins for scenery among the schools I have visited. Many of the schools people say are scenic over look the ocean, but UCSB is right next to the ocean. Many of the students who live in Isla Vista, adjacent to UCSB, live on a cliff right above the beach. What other school can say that? Additionally, there are scenic mountains in the background furthering the scenery surrounding the campus.

New College of Florida
