Most sought after dorms and other random stuff....

Accepted EA and have an early registration for housing so hope I have a choice in housing.

1) That being said, looking for folks advice as to what are the most sought after dorms and why? I understand that it is personal preference but are there a few that are standouts.

2) When people say the high rises are party dorms, that could be a plus and a minus. I am a non-drinker so don't plan on frequenting the bars but I don't want to feel left out so maybe that kind of dorm could be good. What do you think!

3) Also, if I have a conviction about not drinking, do you think I would be uncomfortable in the fraternity setting. What percentage of say those in fraternities would you say don't drink other than say the Christian fraternities (which I am fine with but just curious about the others)?

Rutherford is super nice. Just opened in August, big rooms, private bathrooms, great location between two dining halls and right in the middle of campus. Surrounded by bus stops. It’s not quite as social though.

Do not live in the high rises if you don’t like drinking. I promise you you’ll hate it. Try Hill community. They’re social freshmen dorms but lack the party-all-the-time attitude. Great location, bigger rooms, in-room temperature control, and close to the middle of campus.

Do not join a fraternity if you have a conviction about not drinking. All fraternities drink and if they find out you don’t, they’ll probably force it during rush even though technically that’s illegal hazing. You won’t enjoy Greek life as a non-drinker. You could look into organizations like Wesley (and Freshley which is the ministry for freshmen), Young Life, and other stuff like that.

Let me know if you have any more questions! I recommend joining the UGA Class of 2018 Facebook page for more info. c: Good luck!

1) Okay high rise dorms are Creswell (referred to as CresHell), Russell, and Brumby (was all female, now coed). These are all party dorms, BUT you get to meet a lot of people and have a great social life. It’s pretty packed and with a large number of people using such public spaces, you often get that drunk kid puking in the shower.I would recommend living in Reed. It’s right at the stadium, close to downtown, and away from the party central. Or Morris, which is the closest to downtown. I wouldn’t recommend East Campus as a freshman because it’s pretty far as far as campus goes. (North campus borders with downtown and is closer to the student center). Meyers is an honors dorm, which I would recommend too.
2) Fraternity life is definitely about using fake id’s, drinking as much as possible, and have all the connections to get drugs. I don’t recommend it if you aren’t wanting to get involved with alcohol. Pledgeship is a pretty intimidating task also, especially as an incoming new freshman. You’re pretty much the ‘■■■■■’. UGA does have some great things to do like Phi Slam which is a huge party WITHOUT alcohol or drugs.
