Most Unlikely Acceptances

What is the most unlikely acceptance you have seen?

I know a kid who was accepted into BC with a 2.8 or something like that, and his SAT wasn't great either. His essay probably rocked.

i know a doode who go tinto UCLA with a 3.1 uw and a 1800. Engineering, Asian, nothing amazing (i heard essays were mediocre).

how is that possible can you tell me more about that?

1090 sat, black, Upenn.

1090/1600? or 1090/2400? Did s/he have amazing ECs?

Sorry but I get the feeling that the point of this thread will be to look at the so-called "bottom end" of selective schools' admittance and we all bemoan how unfair the system is. Groan -- another URM, legacy, athlete bashing thread this will become.

"Oh yeah? Well I can top that one! I knew this kid who cheated all the time, had a 12 ACT, forgot his SATIIs, is 4th generation upper-class URM whose parents went to Harvard, ...."

You get the picture.

sounds like some sour grapes have been consumed. everybody knows that admissions can be a crapshoot, and if you submitted the best application you could and got in, good for you. if you didnt get in and you're upset that these kids did, quit complaining. all of these threads like this turn into "their essays just couldnt have been that good, their gpa wasnt that great, they got crappy SAT scores, they yada yada yada"...do you seriously know every little detail about their academic profile? maybe they did have a stellar essay or amazing ECs that you dont know about. perhaps they have a really good GPA but you just dont realize it because they slack off in class---some of the guys in my class graduated with 4.0 UW even though they were known stoners who slept in class. they worked hard outside of class, nobody really knew they had a 4.0 until graduation when the senior awards night. at least at my school, gpa isnt a public record and neither are SAT scores, so i'm not sure how you're getting your info unless its coming straight from these kids' mouths or you look over their shoulder as they fill out apps.

i guess i'm just the other end of the spectrum. i graduated with a 3.98 UW, good ECs and great essays and got into UNC-CH, UMich, and UVA from OOS. i read a post ON HERE from another person from my school (she didnt know at the time that i post here) saying things like "she had a 3.5 and no ECs and i've seen her writing, etc, etc, etc" and the next day at school i handed her an exact copy of my application. she apologized and felt like a dumbass for making stupid remarks.

we have had a million fo these threads...no-one really cares..

Hey, back off. Threads like these are meant for guys like me who are looking for a way to get in without having the smartest IQ or study sticky mind in the world but who are still passionate and motivated. If you don't like the thread, don't click it. Because maybe, just maybe, some of us just struggle in class regardless of how much we try. You know that kid who studies 5 hours and gets lower grades than the kid who studies 1 hour? Ever think that guy has feelings and a dream also? maybe that's why he studies 5 hours. So shove it.

Anyways, someone back awhile ago got into NYU with like a 2-sumthing, but he was featured on the NY times or something hahaha.

radronOmega: You've got to understand that my post (and the few that followed it) aren't focused on you. Although you're trying to glean some insights on how to better market your application file, this type of thread attracts whiners and complainers who want to feel superior, IMHO.

Frankly I like the ferocity and the content of what you conveyed. I would imagine that whatever school you attend, will be well served by your presence. But know that on these forums are many, many kids who feel they're entitled, are overcompetitive, and feel that they need to stomp on someone "lower" than themselves to make themselves feel good. That's what the critical comments on this board have been about I would imagine.

For you, my hope is that some sagely adcom will see all you have to offer and give you a nod . Although some might argue, nothing replaces hard work and self initiative. Good luck to you!

1690 SAT 2.94 GPA Northwestern...***?
