I think that this is really unfair and just shows how flawed the justice system is!

Yeah that’s really idiotic. Here’s a good analysis of it from a transit/urban planning blog:

[The streets and the courts failed Raquel Nelson - Greater Greater Washington](http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/11396/the-streets-and-the-courts-failed-raquel-nelson/)

What disgusts me is that the alcoholic idiot who actually killed her son will get a lighter sentence. **** drunk drivers.

we get it. our legal system is flawed. become someone and change it if you must.

This makes me sick. I had a good friend die from a DD hit and run accident and my dad was hit by a DD 7 years ago (still very messed up from it and can’t work). The fact that the guy who killed this boy was only given 6 months is just f*ed up. I’m sorry, you take a life and you don’t get to walk free- at least not for a good long while.

The mother has been punished enough. All this is really doing is forcing those other children to lose their mother after they already lost a brother. Sickening.

In all my times of living in a city or a town… I have never seen anyone walk to a cross walk at that distance (3/10 of a mile). And… I have seen police officers, fireman, prosecutors, judges and attorneys all J-Walk as well. This man drank and hit and run… killed someone… You bet he would have done the same if they had been in a cross walk.

All I can say is smh…

Not to mention that this was the driver’s third time committing a hit and run.

yeah but we will just wait to see what her conviction is tomarow

Wow! Just WOW!

I never jaywalked with my kids but where I live crosswalks are a lot closer than 3/10ths of a mile apart. I don’t know that I also wouldn’t have done what Raquel did in her position.

I can’t imagine the horror of seeing your baby killed in front of you and then going to jail for what is essentially a bad decision. I would hope that she would be given a suspended sentence and probation. In addition, she should sue the drunk driver for wrongful death of her son and emotional distress.

Whoever mentioned Casey Anthony is right. That one got away with murder (I hear OJ is single) and this poor woman winds up in jail.

That’s awful!
I recommend everyone go sign the online petition mentioned at the end of the article. I went and signed, and not sure if it’ll make a difference, but it’s better than nothing.

Perhaps it’s time for more rigorous testing of jurors to determine whether they’re actually somewhat intelligent?

How this woman ends up in jail when Casey Anthony - whose guilt was indeed proven beyond a reasonable doubt (which does not require forensic evidence) - walks completely is just beyond me.

As for the driver, the sentence is ridiculous. A DUI coupled with involuntary manslaughter should not warrant less jail time than jaywalking. While I agree this woman may have been guilty of reckless conduct, she’s certainly not guilty of any form of homicide.

Shouldn’t have J walked. It’s illegal for a reason. That being, you might get hit by a car.
If her illegal activity directly or indirectly caused harm to another individual she should be held accountable.

she didn’t get any jail time :)

I am right there with RedSeven…Casey Anthony walked and this mother had charges brought against her. The whole thing seems outrageous.

I was wondering, before I even opened the thread, “How long before I hear the name ‘Casey Anthony’?” We have a winner.
