Well, My DD is now officially a graduate of OCU’s Musical Theater program with a Bachelor of Music. I am so proud of her and very grateful for the experience, training and education that she received over the past 4 years at OCU. She is, at this very moment, in NYC as she auditioned and was chosen to be apart of the NY Showcase today for agents and industry professionals–and has plans to permanently move to Manhattan in July with fellow brand new alum. I believe she had a great mix of a liberal arts and musical theater training and she had fabulous performing opportunities. She made many NYC contacts each year during the OCU sponsored Spring Breaks in NYC–and feels completely comfortable moving there with a built-in network of alumni/friends and familiarity with the industry. Her dance training was superb; vocal training and coaching were exactly what she needed to grow; acting in my opinion was lacking just a bit (not content–it was excellent–just wish there had been more classes in the curriculum. Note: my DD auditioned during one of her Spring Breaks in NYC and was accepted into the Circle in the Square (CITS) summer program in between sophomore and junior year and focused on acting training). The summer between junior and senior year, she was “discovered” by a recording producer during a solo singing/piano gig at a restaurant and she has since then been working on writing and recording songs on school breaks. She has been flown to LA to write and record and has exciting potential in that arena. They are even willing to have her continue to write and record in NYC–as that is her desired location to pursue her musical theatre career. My daughter had tremendous training at OCU and is now ready to take on NYC and achieve her dreams…OCU…thank-you, thank-you, thank-you from the bottom of my heart!

Thank you for this reflection! My daughter just finished her freshman year at OCU and simply loves it. The only thing I question is the number of musical theatre student they choose. Her class has about 12 boys and 12 girls. Seems like a large number. But I will say that it makes one sense the reality of competition as it will be in the real world. We both love Dr. H of the musical theatre department. Every show he produces is epically wonderful and broadway ready. And the dance department as I have seen and as I have heard is ‘second only to Juliard school of dance’. Every dance show I have seen is simply jaw-dropping spectacular!! Congratulations to your daughter with her success!!

TXKat, that is fabulous news about your daughter! Congrats, as my son says, “kids coming out of OCU are well trained and ready to go!”

Great reflection on four years of training! Also wanted to post and send my best wishes. I don’t think OKC was hit too bad but hoping that everyone is alright with the tornados! Thinking of y’all.

Our daughter is going to be a freshman MT this Fall at OCU. She cannot wait to get there. So glad to hear how pleased recent grads and current students are. My husband took D to her audition and remarked “everyone there seems so happy!”. Combine that with amazing training and I don’t know what moreyou could want! If recent grads/current students have any advice for incoming freshman, please share!
