@Veryapparent - thanks! She had an alumni interview but not an on campus interview. We are going up that way to visit some other schools so if Mount Holyoke is open to waitlisted students meeting briefly with an admissions officer I thought she might want to try that.
Hi @4sugarplums can you tell me what you know about the Mount Holyoke waitlist? My daughter just got waitlisted—she’s still processing the disappointment and doesn’t want to talk about it much yet. You said there are “many fewer” on the list than SL Do you know how many? How did you get this information? Thanks! Best of luck to you.
Hi @4sugarplums - i’m not sure if my previous reply posted properly. Please forgive me if this is a repeat. I am wondering about your comment on the size of the Mount Holyoke waitlist. My daughter was waitlisted and is still dealing with the disappointment and doesn’t really want to talk about it yet, so I haven’t seen her letter. Is there information in the letter regarding the size or nature of the waitlist? Any and all info you can share would be appreciated. Good luck to your daughter! !
Are any of u planning on attending some other schools ?
@kschneeb hang on let me see if I can screen shot that section of the letter. My daughter emailed me the letter from them Tuesday…be back
How many students are on the waitlist? Is it ranked?
By late April, we anticipate that 200-250 students will have accepted our offer to remain on the waitlist. While
it is not ranked, we will be heavily influenced by your intent to enroll, your original application, and additional
supporting materials. Depending on our financial aid commitments to date, financial need may be a factor in our
decision. In the past, we have made as many as 50 offers or as few as none, depending upon how many original
offers are accepted.
@kschneeb I replied on the other thread :). I read that SL has one of the top ten highest number of folks on WL (might have been an old figure, I think this was a google search). But, like, the waitlist was over a thousand. Holyoke’s is much lower. SL would have been a good fit for my kid as a self led homeschooler so that was disappointing and Holyoke was my fave for her because it seemed to fit her personality best so another disappointment. She will be a first generation so I guess I’m mostly just feeling stupid as I had no clue how competitive and cutthroat and how utterly silly our transcript must have looked to folks … I was truly hoping they would see the value in an out of the box education. Perhaps some of the others will.
Thank you so much! If these numbers are accurate it could certainly be worse.
It sounds like it would be an excellent idea to show additional interest!!
I got In spring admission too but no merit.
accepted for biology w/ the leadership financial award!!

@4sugarplums I will cross my fingers for your daughter!! Holyoke’s WL does seem less daunting. We are waiting on two long shots—Bryn Mawr and Wesleyan. You never know! Once she hears from them she will have to figure out what she wants to do. Right now I think she is still processing the disappointment of getting waitlisted, but I’m hoping she gets motivated to take control of what she can in the process—choose and love a school she’s into already, and pursue Holyoke if she wants to. It’s a funny kind of doublethink that’s required, because they really need to commit to the idea of going to a school they got into while also waiting to hear about the waitlist! I’m sure some good options will come through for your daughter. Don’t be so hard on yourself!
@kschneeb, we got our first outright rejection last night but are expecting three today. We are just so sad…that sounds like a helicopter parent and I’m not but I’m just sad because she’s so sad. It’s even awful how it is phrased…“they rejected me.” Ugh. And I guess I’m just irked because all these schools say they take a “holistic” approach to admissions and I think that is utter BS…if you are a different kind of kid with a different kind of education and a different kind of transcript…you are toast. I sound bitter and I don’t mean to be, it’s just gonna be a tough day with three coming in this afternoon. I’m off to Walmart for lots of junk food for tonight.
@4sugarplums
One of the Trustee scholars last year at Mt Holyoke was homeschooled and had a very different experience (and few ECs etc due to location). She got a full tuition scholarship. The recipient has posted in the Mt H threads. If you D was waitlisted that probably wasn’t the reason. I am really keeping my fingers crossed for your daughter.
My D got in Spring admission, we were fortunately up in Noho visiting her sister at Smith, so we were able to drop by and get our heads around what that meant, and while we are 100% happy with starting in the spring we are hopeful that she’ll get bumped into the fall admission group. She got need aid but no merit, but it’s enough to make it an easy yes. Interestingly she also got admitted to Brandeis with a Spring start. It’s very smart of them to do this, IMO, but I wish that they explained it better in the acceptance letter so that it really lets students know that this is not a “second tier” yes, but a “you are the kind of student that we believe can handle this and still thrive”. Best of luck to all!
@Veryapparent, that is actually good to know! Well, good to know that homeschoolers ARE looked at, perhaps not good to know that wasn’t the issue with her Do you happen to know her user name? Would love to look her up. We secular homeschool in the deep, deep south and no grades/tests. I thought her ACT scores were good (for this area, they are!) She studied in south Africa for four months last fall…politically active, Duke Tipster, summer at Smith program, Scholastic silver key winner (plus honorable mentions other years), ACLU summer institute and this year advanced advocacy program, works two jobs, volunteers at library and museum…yet rejections and waitlists all over the place. I honestly don’t know what else we could have done. Well, that’s not true, obviously we could have public schooled. But she said yesterday she had rather been homeschooled these last six years and no college acceptance and happy than miserable in publics school here and accepted, so there ya go.
It’s in the trustee scholar thread and the poster is AJRaven. Best of luck! Your daughter sounds like an amazing kiddo. Fingers crossed for good news.
My D was accepted and received $15,000 per year in merit aid (the leadership award). She is humanities-focused, and is considering languages (she currently speaks French, German, and English), music, and/or comparative lit as potential majors. MHC is one of her top choices (still waiting to hear from Oberlin!). We visited campus the spring of her junior year and she had a wonderful interview and tour–we both fell in love with the place. Her stats:
-36 ACT
-1550 SAT
-3.98 unweighted GPA
-4 AP classes
-National Merit honorable mention
-extensive extracurriculars, including lots of cello-related activities, volunteering at the Special Collections of a local university library, co-founder of a literary website, music and literary summer camps at Interlochen, Wellesley, U of Chicago
D’oh–posted on the wrong thread (meant to post on the almost-identically-titled adjacent thread)! My apologies.
