@MYOS1634 It’s not that. It’s just that UCLA is a crapshoot no matter where you go, as are most “top” schools… I knew an astrophysics major from a community college who was offered a full scholarship to Stanford but outright rejected by UCLA.
So if my main goal is to get a first-rate education with excellent faculty, smart students and stimulating class discussions, MoHo would be the way to go. There are many higher-ups at Fox, WME, NBC and Weinstein who didn’t graduate from UCLA. (Ari Emanuel went to Macalester)
I thought about it a bit more and realized that qualitatively, UCLA does not provide the first-rate education I seek. I know junior transfers there who are in upper division classes that have 300 students in them. I mean, in that case what’s the point of even going to class? You might as well just teach yourself if you can barely hear or see the lecture.
Also, I found an agent from MoHo who ran the story department at ICM. She has a degree in American studies, so it’s not like humanities degrees are completely useless. Lol.

@cmgrayson Being on the lower end of stats at a local commuter college is WAY different, though. I guess that puts me at a meh… 7/10 in terms of academic prowess, right?

Well yeah being on the lower end of Holyoke stats still makes you a relatively talented student. You are probably a 10/10 without the underlying mood issues (if you can’t bring yourself to go to class despite knowing that not going to class affects your grade negatively and you haven’t addressed that then IMO I think it’s a waste of time to go back until you figure out what’s eating you). There’s something stopping you from doing your best. Why not pursue it while you’re still at JC (or on a short break). Before you head back across the country to Holyoke.

@cmgrayson Thank you for the support, lol. I saw the story about Madison Holleran and how she was essentially a perfect student-athlete, yet suffered from significant psychological distress and such. Sometimes I just wonder if I’m causing my own problems. I don’t know. I probably shouldn’t be talking about this on College Confidential.

F*ck it, I’ll just drop out of school and become a rapper. HA jk…

Today I read somewhere that a correlation exists between creativity and depression. Depression does not cause creativity, but highly creative individuals are at a higher risk of experiencing depression than others.
Additionally, depressives tend to listen to a lot of music. Meh. Interesting. At Holyoke, I’d lock myself in my dorm and blast Childish Gambino all day long.

Lol.

Also my psych teacher told us that he curled up in a fetal position and remained in bed for 80% of his sophomore year at UCLA. I read somewhere that Rashida Jones experienced something similar too.

Hmmph. It’s comforting to know that other people go through similar challenges.

seriously?!?! none of the seven sisters are easy to get into. I wish. I applied to Bryn Mawr ED II with a 3.5 uw, 4.9 weighted and a 4.0 during junior year (all community college courses though)- 6 honors classes taken in high school total. and I take two languages- Spanish and Italian. and my mom went to grad school there. Act 28- 10 on the writing section. And I did everything I could to convey my interest and improve my chances- it just didn’t happen.
I got rejected. So- it is not easy by any means to get in there. And the # of applications they get increase every year across the board:
smith got 600 more apps this year than last year. So I imagine I’ll probably get rejected there.
I have a small chance at Mt Holyoke.
I wouldn’t have any at all at Barnard, Wellesley, or Vassar.
They are all great schools and hopefully I will be lucky enough to be accepted to one of them and attend such a fine instituition.
californya, MHC doesn’t seem to be the best fit for your ambitions, unless, you want to do something like, go into entertainment law or something like that, in which case, MHC is a good springboard for law school. Take a look at this list–UCLA isn’t even on it. http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report-2014/best-schools-by-major/communications-majors But there are several others you could possibly directly transfer into?
this thread is from last year. @californya, what did you end up doing? I hope you are ok.
@rach131 good luck!!
@redpoodles
thank you! same to you.
