Hi everyone! I’m in a bit of a dilemma. Could you help me decide which school to attend? Please share your opinions!
About me and what I want in a school: I really, really want to study Italian in college (double majoring with anthropology). Unfortunately Rhodes doesn’t offer any Italian courses, so that’s kind of holding me back from committing to Rhodes. On the other hand, Mount Holyoke seems perfect except for the loans that I’m going to have to take out. I would just commit to Mount Holyoke, but I want to go to grad school as well, and there’s a big possibility that I’m going to have to take out even more loans to get my MA…
Here’s my pros and cons list of the two schools:
PROS:
Rhodes:
Cheaper
Memphis
Co-ed
Better weather
Mount Holyoke:
5 college consortium
Offers Italian
Easier distribution requirements
Better dorms and food
CONS:
Rhodes:
Fewer course selections
Doesn’t offer Italian
Dorms and food are average
Mount Holyoke:
More expensive (will graduate 28k in loans)
All-girls
Long winter
Are you able to attend the Admitted Student programs before you make your decision? If you are certain you want to study Italian I would seriously consider MHC since they offer both a major and minor and study abroad options. However an all women’s environment is very different from a coed campus like Rhodes so it helps if you can visit to make sure you would be comfortable in that setting.
Unfortunately, I cannot go to the Admitted Student programs I am an international student.
hey I’ve seen you on loads of threads. I’m interested in studying languages too (will be attending moho with a romance languages major (primary emphasis spanish, secondary italian and self designed minor in music).
both are great schools. with the consortium, boys aren’t too far and the girls I’ve met in the accepted student FB page are amazing.
winters will be harsh- but I personally do not mind the cold. if ur always cold, this prob isn’t the best place for you.
i just got an email about virtual chat for accepted students and their families. if its not in your inbox, check ur junk and spam sections. if not, call or email them about it to get the deets.
what is the difference in loans for rhodes? 28k total or a year (huge difference- altogether my loans will be 24k which I think is very good considering how expensive college is today)
and where r u from again? sorry I can’t remember.
def join the FB group and introduce yourself if u haven’t already.
at the end, decide what is best for you in the long haul (within geographic and financial reason).
If you have your heart set on studying Italian and potentially want to make a career in it- then see if Rhodes is able to accomodate that.
i’ve emailed with the department head of italian for placement for my first course in the fall and she is awesome.
best of luck. if u introduce urself on the page mention your cc thread name and I’ll message you.
