Mount Holyoke vs. SUNY Geneseo

I'm torn between both. I love MHC, I truly have a deep gut feeling about it and I know the answer I am looking for going into this. However, Geneseo is nearly half the price since I am in-state and it's a great school. I keep hearing about the return value on MHC with the alumna network, internships, community, all-women, close relationships with professors, etc.

Any reasons I should spend more, or why I should go to SUNY Geneseo? I have a clear bias now, but I'd love to hear reasons it would be worth it, and I would especially love to hear from the other side.

As I once said to a then-current Mount Holyoke student, don’t worry about the cost of college in the short run if you can put together a financial aid package that will allow you to enroll. I am a Mount Holyoke alumna and an attorney. I can now earn what a year of college cost for me in several hours. You will never regret choosing Mount Holyoke.

dc20016 - I agree that Mt. Holyoke is a special place. However, if you do not plan on being an attorney or working on Wall street then paying for college may be a huge burden. We have been blessed that Holyoke is giving our D a great pkg and that IS figuring into our decision between Smith, Holyoke and Wellelsley, etc. She wants to study neuroscience and do research - not a guaranteed path to financial security as she will need to get a PhD so the aid matters big time. Most advisors are now telling young people to consider very carefully the amount of debt they take on. 23,000 equates to 250/month - a modest car payment. Now imagine that 80 to 100K would be like a mortgage. If you plan on being a corporate attorney or hedge fund manager go for it, but for many others it is not a great plan. We have looked at this from a holistic perspective - emotional, academic and financial fit.

Thank you for your inputs. I will be attending Geneseo because of the cost–I am going to be a humanities major and cannot handle that sort of debt. I hope to transfer if I can receive comparable aid to Geneseo after a year or two. :)

This is heart breaking. I would not miss a year at Mount Holyoke for anything. Sadly, you will not know what you missed.
