Move in advice

Any tips for move in day???

Also, I'm coming from California and skeptical about bringing the storage bins and other large items from home. I was hoping on buying them when I got on campus. Is there any place nearby (hopefully without needing to rent a car) such as Walmart or Target where I can get my dorm necessities? Thanks!

Also incoming freshman here. I’d call the office of first year and transfer programs, I’m sure they can advise you.

hey ScottG good to hear from you on the forum again. My D will be attendindg SU this fall.I guess she was orange blooded after all . Good luck. My D did accept enrollment to UF but after carefully crunching numbers and logistics we ate the enrollment fee and she decided on Syracuse .In the end it all comes down to the Orange lol

Target and all of the big box stores require a car (although there are campus buses). However, the bookstore does have all kinds of things from BBB for move-in. So you are probably all set. Also, it is very safe to ship boxes to the dorm, so you could buy things before and have them shipped to the dorm.

Has anyone used the box storage company MyLazyBones?

As someone that is coming to Syracuse all the way from Texas I advice you to rent a car. Even if it is for the day it is way more cost effective to use the car to buy things at other stores than to buy it all at campus where the prices are jacked up. There are stores and malls that I checked out that are close to campus the only problem is everyone is going to be buying them at the same time since Syracuse is a smaller college city. I am buying things that I do not need right away in Texas and im shipping it to the dorms once we get our housing and roomates notice. As for the other things stores like walmart and bed bath and beyond and many more stores have online stores where you can order online and ship directly to the store so that all we have to do is pick everything up so we are going to do that. Because I am on a budget myself I have been looking for the cheapest options and renting a car for a a day or two will save more money for other things.

Don’t worry about the stores being overcrowded on move-in days. Syracuse has several walmarts, targets, etc. The best ones are in the neighboring town about 15 minutes from campus. It was very convenient to pick out the stuff at your local store back home (like BBB) and have it waiting for you in the Syracuse store- and you don’t have to buy everything you picked out. There’s no question that having a car for a little while is a huge convenience to outfit your dorm room.

Second the idea of renting a car. Does Syracuse have Zipcars? Closest walmart is about 6 miles away, closet target is about 10 miles, Bed, bath and Beyond about 5 miles. All off the main drag of Erie Blvd. Don’t buy anything you don’t absolutely have to from the bookstore or M Street. The markup is crazy.

Do anyone know if Syracuse provide / sell the bedrisers to raise the bed in the dorm or we have to buy our own ?

Also, if you want to get some stuff from target, don’t forget to check the move in book: In events, on September 1st:

Will Syracuse Loft a bed if requested?

Your best bet is to call housing - at this point in the year, there is a call center there. Also, I always found the parents office really helpful throughout my four years. We had bought bedraisers for the dorms and didn’t need them because the beds were already raised by that much. It was great for two big 30 by 14 high plastic containers (I just measured one). But it all depends on which dorm your student is in, I’m sure. First year, my daughter was in a split double in DellPlain and except for the small closet, it was plenty roomy. Second year, she was on South Campus and it will be a long time until she has that much room again.

For anyone that would like to get a jump on moving in to your actual assigned Fall Semester dorm under a relaxed atmosphere and get first dibs on your room, you can go early by enrolling in the L.O.O.P. (Leadership Outdoor Orientation Program). You move in Aug. 18th and then go on an adventure based program with around 70 other students. My D did this last year for her freshman incoming and was so thrilled with the program. She instantaneously met 70 friends, many of which she stayed in touch with throughout the whole school year. It’s a great way to meet others because you bond through this fun program.

You return to SU in the evening of the day when the move-in apocalypse occurs so you miss all of the mayhem. You’re actually going out that evening to meet with all of you’re new friends while the move-ins are staring at the walls of their room.

I believe there is limited space for this.

Here’s both links for the program: (Copy/Paste in address bar)

All moved in and ready to take on the world. Mom and Dad could not be prouder.

How did it go, HappyDaddy?

Went well. She is so excited. Split double room. She and my wife put it all together.
How is it going for your DD at Mizzou ?

@HappyDaddy, Glad that all went well and that your DD is excited about SU. Back in the day, Haven was an all girls dorm and had a dinning hall. I was surprised to learn from one of the threads on CC that the dinning hall is no longer there and that it is now a coed dorm.

D2 is doing well - moved in 10 days ago and she is enjoying Mizzou. Will you be going back to Syracuse for Family Weekend? I will be there for Orange Central (Homecoming) in October.

We will not make family weekend. Don’t have the mula for much travel. DD called today for another deposit :). What’s a Dad to do
