Move In Advice

My D is moving into Letts on Saturday. Any advice? Particularly, what time of day seems to be best to avoid the lines? There is a floor meeting at 8pm so she needs to be on campus by then.

If this is a freshman move in, typically there is a special format for move-in (or at least at XU there was). We had times set for last name groups, and you were supposed to come within the time your name fell under. In the case that there is no “set” time for you, earlier is typically better, as most college students aren’t very excited to move in early in the morning, and even if there are a lot of people there it will still give enough time to get settled in before her meeting. Your daughter’s school should send information to you about move in, or at the very least have it on their website, which you can usually find by typing “move in” or “residence life” in the school’s search bar. Hope that helped and good luck to your daughter this year!

Breathe. Just know it’s going to be crazy. You have 1000+ people moving in in a 12 hour span and 500+ moving into the Letts/Anderson/Centennial Dorms. It’s going to be 86 and humid because a cold front is moving through so people will be cranky – not everyone is from Texas and used to it ;).

Tips:

  1. Arrive somewhere from noon to two, there will be lines, but they might be more toned down.
8-10am has all the people trying to get in ASAP.
10-12am has all the people trying to get in ASAP who got caught in DC traffic or lost.
So Grab an early lunch and head on over.

2) If you are able-bodied or have a spouse (and daughter) that are, use the stairs as much as you can. There are only a few elevators and while they’re bigger than the Anderson side, they’re slow and there will be a line. If you’re below the 4th floor, I’d highly advise using them.

3) This is probably my biggest piece of advice: BRING/RENT/BORROW a dolly of some kind. The school DOES provide them but there are probably only 5 or 6 per dorm and as you can imagine, they get snatched up quickly.

I hope that helps. Don’t hesitate to ask for help either, in the past there have been volunteers from Greek Life and other Student Organizations that help move students in. Strike up a conversation!

Thanks for the advice. I don’t think the stairs are going to work for us -she’s on the 6th floor. Unless I feel the need for a really good workout! I will bring lots of patience.

To build on what AUTransfer said, there will be plenty of volunteers from Greek Life and other student organizations to help with move-in all weekend. In fact, I’m one of them! I’ll be on north campus but best of luck to you and your D and welcome to AU!

Our move-in last year was incredibly easy–we were able to pull up the car right in front of the building, grab a cart, and had everything inside in minutes (then the fun began…). This was mid-afternoon. Lots of helpful people were around to assist. All in all, nothing to fret about.

AUTransfer is right… the school supplied carts go quickly and are almost impossible to get. Bring your own.

Other than that, enjoy. I can’t wait to see the new SIS building this time.

How did move in go today? My son is a sophomore and volunteered to help the freshman move in, so we dropped him off yesterday. He was helping in the 11am shift. I understand he got a T shirt to wear that said something like “Welcome Wonks”

Boy was he anxious to get back! He loves it there.

Welcome Wonks were everywhere & very helpful! We arrived around 9:30 am and the car line to check in at Letts/Anderson/Centennial snaked pretty far down Nebraska Ave. We parked in the lot and wheeled the rolling bags to Letts and check in went quickly for D. We picked up shipped packages in Anderson and then headed out to BB&B and Target for some power shopping. When we came back around 4pm, the line was about 6 cars long and we were in & out in no time.

We checked in around 3 and it went pretty smoothly (about 15 minute wait for space in front of Letts). We laughed about the “Welcome Wonks” however. By late afternoon, most of them looked like they had had enough welcoming for the day. They weren’t much help, except to invite D to frat party later that evening!

Move in went great, pulled right up to the stairs at Letts, unloaded vechicle while D checked in. when finished unloading moved vechicle for others to park and wife waited with stuff while D went up to room. I did bring my own hand-truck which made life really easy. By the time I moved truck, line of cars was out on Nebraska ave. Just timed it right and got in early.

We didn’t get in the line of cars for a spot in front of the dorm. We parked in a faculty lot and rolled a couple of rolling suitcases and a stack on a folding luggage cart we brought with us. While we waited in the lobby for D to get her ID/keys someone offered hubby a cart so he made another trip while D was still getting signed in. She got her key and we took it all up. She had ordered a fridge from Walmart and it waiting in her room-no need for us to transport it. It could not have gone more smoothly.
