We are trying to book flights for our soon-to-be Tufts freshman, and are unclear about dorm move-in arrangements. DS has applied for the TWO pre-orientation -- I guess we won't know for a while if he got in or not, but are keeping our fingers crossed. So the question is -- do kids move into their dorm room before they leave for pre-orientation? And if they don't do a pre-orientation, when can they move in? If we, his parents, want to be there to help move him in (and participate in any welcome-type events that might be appropriate for parents, if there are any), when should we plan on being there? We are flying from California, and probably can only stay a couple of days. Any guidance on this would be much appreciated.

I’m pretty confident about what I’m about to say, but I didn’t do a pre-orientation myself. I would advise you to just call admissions; they’ll be happy to help you.

Not sure about TWO, but I know the FOCUS kids live out of a duffel bag in a nearby Church. Everyone moves in to their dorms on matriculation day, which is August 31 this year. That’s the day you want to be there. If you’re flying all the way from California, I would send him over with a bag or two and come with the rest of the stuff he is bringing on August 30, stay overnight in a hotel, and help him move in the morning of August 31.

Thanks, TuftsStudent. Do you know if there are any festivities involving the parents about that time, or do they save all that for Parents Weekend later on?

Nope, it’s all saved for Parents’ Weekend. It’s move-in in the morning, followed by a talk or two by a dean, then lunch on the President’s lawn, then the matriculation ceremony (which ends at 3:00 or so). Parents are requested to leave campus by 4:00 or so.

Different pre-orientations do have different move-ins actually. If he does get into TWO, you shouldn’t have to worry since they don’t move-in until normal but CAFE, FIT, and IO all move-in when the program begins. But that would only be applicable for you if he did not get into TWO and there were spaces available in these programs that he wanted to apply for/

So there usually is a second round of pre-orientation applications? I was wondering about that.

Oops – just saw your post on the pre-orientation thread, lioness. Thanks for the info on the pre-orientation application process!

My D has also applied to TWO and is coming from California. Feel free to PM me and we can be confused about the process together.

Also coming from California and aiming for TWO. A TWO rep did say that the TWOers, upon their return, would be spending the night in their dorm room, which would be Tuesday night, August 30th.

Also flying in, but from Florida. My daughter is doing the TWO program. It seems that they do sleep in the dorm on August 30, so they need to have toiletries and sheets. We get in on the 30th and are picking stuff up from Bed, Bath and Beyond and will keep in our car until move in on Wednesday. The logistics of this are killing me!!!

Crazy, isn’t it? I hope we all meet each other on move-in day. Maybe we should wear badges with our College Confidential names! :)

Students in CAFE, FIT and IO are able to move into their rooms on the first day of their respective programs. But, just because they are able to do so, doesn’t mean everyone will. Many students come up with a duffel packed for just the week, and then their parents (or whoever) come up on matriculation day with the rest of the stuff.

Students in Wilderness (AKA TWO) and FOCUS will be able to sleep in their rooms on August 30th but won’t actually have time to fully move in until August 31. This is due to programming on the last day. But since they’ve equipped themselves with sleeping bags for their respective programs, they shouldn’t need sheets or anything else.
