Move-In Day 2008

We are driving from the Midwest for Move-In Day on August 24th and have some questions about moving in.

1) Once we get our check-in time, are the lines ridiculously long to pull up to the dorm to unload?
2) Is there parking?
3) Is it feasible to park several blocks away and walk?
4) What is the earliest check in time available?

I believe I read somewhere that as late as 8 pm is the best time to check in, but my daughter is not going to want to wait that long, I am sure! We have never been to New York and we are a bit apprehensive about the chaos we may be getting ourselves in to!

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

H and I went to parent orientation for D who will be in CAS. The housing people were there and said move-in day it is usually organized chaos. The city area around NYU will be very lenient with parking. Usually you pull up to dorm, people will be there to help student get things out of car. The line is long, but it moves and the best suggestion is to have things that roll, luggage, a dolly, hand truck ,etc. makes moving along easier. Also they recommended that if you bring people with you, make sure they are the kind that can help you, not your elderly grandparents or young children who won't be able to help. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. There is street parking and garages around the area. I believe you may have to park after you unload. Also, there will be shuttles to take you to Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond for any dorm items that you may need. This is what was told to us during the orientation, hopefully this will be the case.

You definitely will have to unload then go find parking. Are they actually giving specific check-in times now? When my D was a freshman, it was divided by alphabet, morning or afternoon, and most people didn't pay any attention to that! You should also not count on people being there to help unload your car, there are never enough helpers to do that. You should also not count on getting a cart right away, you will almost certainly wait. It is definitely a chaotic and tiring day. You'll wait in several lines - to get to the front of the dorm to unload, to check in to get your key, to get a cart, to get onto the elevator (every time you need to go up!). Be patient and get a good night's sleep the night before. My advice is always to get into Manhattan and stay overnight so that you can get there early on move in day.

I have never heard of shuttles provided to Wal-Mart or BB&B. There isn't even a Wal-Mart in Manhattan! :)

NYU, NYU police & NYC Police did a great job. I lived in Rubin right on 5th Ave. They blocked off the two left lanes of 5th Ave so we could unload then move the car. There were lines and you only get 1 shot with a laundry cart and the elevators. My Mom also brought a smally dolly. Then the four of us had to hump the rest of my stuff up 12 flights. I brought too much stuff. But I thought Move-in was pretty well orchestrated by NYU. I had 1-3 pm as my time slot.

it might be Target or Kaymart and yes there is a BB and B. The housing person did say they were having shuttles that day. Carts will be sparse, so don't plan on them.

My parents actually have a place in the city and I was thinking of the spending the night thing the night before...but I've got stuff baby, and I'd have to move it from the car to the apartment, then down into the car, THEN downtown to NYU. I recommend not leaving anything in a parked car overnight even in a closed garage.

Well, I'm grateful to have just received my order of a folding platform truck! LOL!

Is it possible to send your stuff UPS to arrive after check-in? I was thinking of bringing a suitcase of clothes and some towels and linens. Will the dorm security people accept UPS delivery?

move in is a sunday, you can't ship anything to arrive at the dorm prior to your check in. You can certainly ship stuff to arrive monday, but you'd be without until they process it and get it to you (maybe Tuesday?)

I have a 9-11 AM move-in slot.

Do you think I can/should show up earlier?

you can, but if there are 7-9ers in the line, they get dibs (think boarding an airline by rows). I'd get there at like 8:30 ish...why prolong what seems like a mighty long day?

So I'm guessing the lines in the 7-9 slot would be way shorter than th rest of the day?True?

Oh and just wondering, do parents typically hang around in the dorms helping their kids settle in/meeting their roommates parents etc. Cause if I move in at 7, I doubt my roommates will actually turn up that early (I'm international so i need to out of convenience) but I don't know if my dad should hang around till the afternoon or whatever...

I'd imagine the first day would be the emotional day or something. Up to your parents if they are feeling sentimental, but I would say a lot of ny region kids would arrive early. (at least that's the case with 2 of my suitemates)

There's not space really for two kids, all their bags, and say 4 parents in an average (traditional) NYU dorm. I'm having my parents and brother help carry, then sending my father and brother out for breakfast.

Kids have to sign up to reserve a move in time, so a whole region of kids can't move in first thing unless they have that slot. They used to do move in times by alphabet...

I'm a commuter student, but the idea of thousands of students (and families) from all over the country and the world moving in sounds really amusing and chaotic...I think it would be funny to see that.

I think I'll come and help my high school friends who are dorming move in.

I haven't gotten a slot yet, but I'm not too worried about it. Much to my brother's distress, I am moving in only one street away from him. I can hang out at his place until the streets are clear!
