Move-in day activities

So move-in day is fast approaching, and I was just wondering if any returning students/alums can share what happens during this time? Are there any organized “meet your floormates” activities? What do the student volunteers, RAs, etc. do? Is it crazy? I’m wondering because I’m planning to come in on an early date (Friday), but my relatives and friends in Boston want to take me out on a day on the town Saturday and possibly Sunday (the two official move-in days), so I’m wondering if I will be missing out on any crucial bonding moments and the like. Thanks!

its more than u asked for, but last year:

i got to BU on saturday afternoon. i dormed at west campus, so that's where i went first. i went to the rich hall cinema room (that's where all west campus residents go to for move-in stuff). lots of RAs were there holding various "booths" for the sign-in process. i went from table to table, signed a bunch of papers, and they gave me my terrier ID card and my key. i happened to meet my RA there too.

my brother waited in line with my ID to get a cart. they took the ID in exchange. i wasnt the one who waited in line, so i think the line for that was the line outdoors, right outside rich hall.

my dad parked near the mcdonald's. we took the cart to the car and loaded my stuff. we passed through the security swipe-in without my ID (the guards will let anyone through on move-in days) and waited on a long line for the elevator to go to my room in sleeper hall.

i unpacked. on saturday, there wasnt anything formal, but especially at night when parents were gone, lots of kids were outside west campus just talking to each other and introducing each other.

on sunday, i organized my room a little more. in the afternoon to dinner time, i went out with my family and some boston relatives. i went back to my dorm after dinner because my RA planned a floor meeting at 8 pm (i'm not sure if thats around the time most RAs plan the first one). it was mainly a more formal getting-to-know-your-floormates thing. then it was a lecture about rules, what's not allowed in the dorms, and then approving your RA's paper that surveyed the conditions of all the furniture in your room.

(the meeting took less than an hour and probably 3/4 of my floormates showed up. its not completely crucial, so if u have something else planned, just make sure u ask your RA what you'll be missing.) right afterwards, i met up with my family again. we later said our good-byes.

monday morning, freshmen had matriculation at the Track and Tennis Center, which was really close to west campus. after that, i went to Splash on nickerson field, which was an activity fair with lots of freebies. my college COM had a formal meeting planned after that.. so i trekked all the way to morse auditorium, where i met my COM PA (the equivalent to a CAS FRA) and also heard speeches from the dean and other important people.

monday night, my two roommates and i went around the floor introducing ourselves. here's where keeping your door open while you're in the room really helps u to get acquainted with your floormates. also, whenever youre waiting for the elevator or waiting for a class to begin, dont be afraid to talk to other people waiting. and in dining halls, sit with people u know. most often, youll meet friends' friends and expand your circle of acquaintances. in the first few weeks, almost all freshmen are looking for friends, so some otherwise awkward interactions will be perfectly normal.

Nathansc--thanks so much for your post! DD is wondering how this will go down over at the Hyatt. She has emailed her roommate several times this summer but has not received response...thus she is not certain what to expect. Do you know approx. how many kids will be housed at Hyatt?

sorry, i have no idea how many people will dorm at the hyatt. my best guess is from looking at the hyatt 2010 facebook group lol.

it has 119 members. not everyone has facebook.. and not all hyatt people on facebook joined the group. so i'm guessing anywhere from 250-400.

I think the number was slightly over 400.
