Move In Day Parking-Help Please

A rising first year had suggested that we park our car close to the dorm the night before to make it easier to unload D's stuff on move in day. Not really sure of the logistics and could use any tips that might make it easier. If it helps, D will be rooming in Hancock of McCormick. We can have access to two cars if that would make a difference. Thanks.

On my first year moving day we simply didn't go down 'til 3pm or so. By then, much of the rush has dissipated.

You do not need to park the night before.

You can park on the curb, and drop off the stuff and then move the car to a parking spot.
This is what most people did.

I was in Hancock last year. We didn't show up until 3:00, and we parked about 30 feet from the side door. There is a problem if you have a monster SUV/truck as several lost their side mirrors clipping other monster SUVs. Too bad.

Woe!! What fun!! This is all too real now--next month on the 24th I will be heading up north to UVA!
It was sooooo beautiful during orientation. It was fun, but yet an honor, to be in my position of being accepted/orienting and watching all the high school seniors with their folks on the family tours. Last year at this time of year, I didn't know where I was going to go, and UVA's essays looked much harder than many of the other schools I was looking at. Ahhhhhh!........

We're staying at the Holiday Inn on Emmet Street. That was the closest we could get. Where is everyone else staying?? I bought a small microwave this weekend. I couldn't decide if I should get a large fridge/freezer or a small one. I'm leaning towards the small one, cause I know it could get funky (I'd have my own little science project) if it's not cleaned often.
I'm in Brown College in the A1 room with the fireplace. I love the room, or at least I think I do???!! But the closets are in the adjoining room. What do folks in Brown with the fireplace do to hide things that need to be stored. Of course I know that one of the closets in the other room is mine, but I sort of like a neat place. I have a few thoughts of my own.

basically you have 2 options: get there really early or get their late afternoon. I live 2 hours away so we left early that morning and got there around 8ish so we were one of the first people there, moving in was relatively easy. The rush is from like 9-1 so if you can't get their early enough or don't want to wake up that early then just wait till 3 or later.

jimmyjam: my roommate last year had this cool fold out closet thing that she kept right next to the fireplace
http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v40/87/47/6111185/n6111185_30620975_707.jpg you can kind of see it in that picture. since you live in brown, it doesnt matter what size things you get as long as you can haul them up the stairs to your room.
ps. brown doesnt have the same kind of rush that the other dorms do ^.^

Thanks for the photo hazelorb. It looks very nice and I'm going to look into finding something like that.
You know, I peaked through the ground floor windows at Brown, and it looked like they were pulling up tiles and molding and such--lots of workers all about. I bet they have it looking real nice by the time school opens.

if you're in the official brown college facebook group, i recently put up pictures... one of them was of my bathroom's moldy ceiling tiles. i think they should work on that. yea.

When and where are keys picked up on move in day?

they'll send you a packet with such information, but i believe for old/new dorms it's either right outside your building or at one of the major buildings in the complex; for brown it's somewhere obvious near the gildergreen.

Thank you.

In front of each of the dorms there will be a desk where you can get your key. Make sure you either have UVA ID or your driver's license, as either will do, but they won't give you your key without it. If you need to pick up your ID after you move in, you can pick it up before 4 at the SAB
