I'm taking a cab to campus from the airport and I'll have two big suitcases, 3 pretty big and heavy boxes, and a heavy carry on. I do also have a small but sturdy hand truck (I hope it's sturdy, I don't really know because it hasn't come yet). We're supposed to check in (somewhere?) before we move in, right? So what do I do with all my stuff when I'm checking in? Do you think a cab driver would just wait with my stuff when I check in, and maybe even help carry stuff up (to the fourth floor with no elevator!) for me if I gave him a good tip? And what do you think a "good tip" would be?

Yes, the cab will wait; though he'll keep the meter running.

Well you have to check in to get the key to your room and other info. I would ask the driver for help because it would be kinda not be smart to leave stuff just sitting on the side of the road. If they are as heavy as you say and don't take the elevator then I would tip nicely. Also if your roommate comes first ask her for help.

Hey! My roommate probably will come first ('cuz she lives near Sacramento--I don't think that's too far), so could I have the cab driver help me bring stuff to the room and THEN go check in? I mean, I guess it's not EXACTLY the way it's supposed to be done, but what's the difference? And who will know? Or care?

Can you ask your roommate to help you?

Wear some booty shorts that day and then I'll gladly come help out.

You can also check out a transport cart from your residence hall. All you need to do is to leave an ID and you're good to go.

hmm if the line is long maybe u can just run and bring it up to ur floor and leave it outside the door so the meter doesnt run too long...

CalBear, I'm not sure how useful carts are in carrying things upstairs. I think between my own hand truck and the wheels on my luggage I'm set for moving things on flat ground.

Fireprincess, at this point, that's exactly the plan!

Thanks everyone. Oh, TopicalTriceratops, surely I'd be barred from the airplane! :p

Chey Chey,
Hope you could arrange with your roommate to get some help.
Since he/she is coming from Sacramento, he/she may have family to help.

It may not be a good idea to leave your stuff with the cab driver or on the side road (or inside the campus) unattended.
