Move-in day suggestions?

I'd like to know others' opinions on timing for move-in day. If move-in time is listed at 8:00-11:00, is it better to get there right at 8:00, or closer to the end (like 10:00)? Also, is it a good idea to schedule different move in times with the roommate, so they aren't both trying to get their stuff in and out the door at the same time? Or is it better for them to do it all together?

Last year, I moved in right at 8:00 and it worked amazingly. There weren’t any lines for the elevator at all. Later in the day, lines were out the door. If you live on a higher level floor, move in as early as possible because you won’t want to carry the fridge up the stairs 8 levels, and you also won’t want to wait 20 minutes for the elevator.

I moved in at the same time as my roommate, and it wasn’t an issue. It actually worked out pretty well because we could arrange things as we brought them in the way both of us wanted. Really though, that shouldn’t be too much of a consideration. It should work out fine either way.

Earlier is better. If you can coordinate with the roommate of when you’re actually packing the stuff in, that might be good, as 2 roommates, boxes of stuff and parent/family members makes for a tight fit in one little room. Go in with trying your best to maintain a good sense of humor…it will be a trying day for everyone’s patience! When D1 was moving in, she was riding back down a packed elevator with the furniture dolly we had brought when a freshman guy’s LOUD mother asked him if he was SURE he had brought enough underwear to college with him, since she wouldn’t be there to do his laundry. My D got off the elevator and instantly thanked me for not being THAT mother, hahaha.

Also, heed ResLife’s suggestions that you have 2 people plus the student there for move-in. Get everything out of the car as soon as possible while student goes in to get keys, etc. and have one person move the car to appropriate parking while the second person stands guard over all the stuff sitting in the grass/sidewalk. Getting out of other people’s way as soon as possible is the most courteous thing to do. If it’s hot, you may want an umbrella for shade. If it’s raining, you’ll want the umbrella and a tarp to throw over everything as it sits waiting to be taken in to the dorm. Good luck!!!

Thanks, I hadn’t thought about the possibility of rain, so we will bring a tarp. So funny about the underwear!

Does anyone know to what extent the Univ blocks torrents? the Last univ I was in just blocked the downloading of any file ending in .torrent but you could change it to .txt and change it back once finished. Or does UM throttle the actual connection? suggestions?

Also how many people use personal routers in the dorms? I know its not allowed as it creates network conflicts with multiple ip addresses and the such but at my last school I just set the router properly to accept the ip address provided by the network and essentially set it up as no different from the univ routers just with a private password. I even disabled the ssid name broadcast so that if you scanned for it you couldn’t see the network without the name and password. thx

You should definitely not torrent anything on the school network, even if its legal. You can dl the files, but you dont want to risk losing your network privileges. I got a a notice for just using a p2p type program to transfer files from one pc to another.

Dont bother with a router, if you take those precautions youd be fine but the internet in dorms is fast enough to play computer games online quite easily on Wifi. Wired connection is even faster.

I live out of state and shipped something from Amazon, which was supposed to arrive after I’m going to get there. Now it’s saying good news, we’re shipping it faster than we expected! So what do I do if a package comes for me before I move in?

Hmm. Well I think I’ll still bring the router. I wanna hook up my printer and NAS to my private network.

Shame UMD doesn’t have a guest network that allows anonymity. Even on “UMD” you need to sign in. Far as torrents go guess I’ll have to find a free network somewhere. I’m close enough to downtown cp… potbelly have wifi? ah, whatever.

mitziespal: I think I read somewhere that your packages can’t show up before you do. At worst they send it back and amazon refunds you.
